Personnel: Barbara Carroll (vocals, piano); Jay Leonhart (double bass); Joe Cocuzzo (drums). Liner Note Author: Will Friedwald.JazzTimes (p.120) - "She's guided a stunning six-decade career as a pianist so imaginatively skillful that she can shift from art house neo-classical to barroom stride with the subtlest twist of an elegant wrist." Barbara Carroll Live At Birdland Songs Live At Birdland Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Always great, always musical, Barbara ! I'm a fan of Barbara Carroll, but I want to say that we are too much a few numbers in France to know this great pianist, modern in 1949, always at the top today, and she add now the art of singing ! Listen to the begining of "Stella", with the "citation" of Ravel, and the way she introduce the theme. Listen to all the tunes, this incredible manner of swinging, the fresh ideas, the art of playing just the good notes, and not too much, really one of the best jazz pianist today. Barbara, I have all the LP's and the CD's, and if you read this review, I have one question : why is it impossible to ear you "live" in France ? I'm the director of a festival in Bordeaux, and if you want, in november 2006, it would be great to have you on the scene... What can I say more ? All the best ! | | Blind Fury Out Of Reach CD (2004) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Limited Edition; United Kingdom
Live At Birdland
$19.49 This was Blind Fury's only album, from the golden metal year of 1985, features "Do It Loud" and "Living on the Edge." Mixing the difference between New Wave of British Metal excess a la Maiden and more streamlined commercial hard rock, English headbangers Blind Fury sought the balance between melody and forward motion. Upon linking up with singer Lou Taylor and changing their name from Satan, the band released 2004's OUT OF REACH, as shiny a slice of black leather rock as any produced by their more famous contemporaries. Opener "Do It Loud" comes off like a mellower Judas Priest, with the interlocking guitars and wailing vocals one would expect, and `Dance of the Crimson Lady, Pt. 1" is a smoke machine epic. After parting ways with frontman Steve Ross, securing the services of new singer Lou Taylor, and coming to the conclusion that they could only make it so far with a name like Satan, guitarists Steve Ramsey and Russ Tippins, bassist Graeme English, and drummer Sean Taylor changed their handle to Blind Fury (actually the name of Taylor's former band) and proceeded to record 1985's Out of Reach album. Curiously, the group's lingering, unresolved creative ambivalence over whether to pursue full-on metallic glory or mainstream acceptance was also reflected in Out of Reach's conflicting songwriting styles, generally resulting in two divergent schools of thought. On the one hand, songs like "Do It Loud," "Contact Rock and Roll," and even the rather silly "Dynamo" suggested that the band was angling for recognition within melodic heavy rock circles, by formulating songs of compact length, safe arrangements, ...
