(6 Customer Reviews)
On New Order's eighth studio album, WAITING FOR THE SIRENS' CALL, guitarist Phil Cunningham--who previously worked with vocalist Bernard Sumner in Electronic--replaces longtime keyboardist Gillian Gilbert. Though hordes of young sound-alikes surfaced between 2001's guest-speckled "comeback," GET READY, and this 2005 release, longtime fans will be pleased to know that these pioneers still sound like nobody but themselves.
New Order's trademark fusion of guitars and synths remains the gold standard for pop/dance/rock crossover, and Peter Hook's patented bass sound once again provides the strong foundation on which the band constructs its melodies. Sonically, this sturdy batch of compositions would fit in nicely between 1986's BROTHERHOOD and 1989's TECHNIQUE. "Krafty" is an obvious nod to Kraftwerk, while the synth bed on the chorus of the title track resembles their own "Your Silent Face" from 1983, and is a shoo-in for inclusion on their next, inevitable singles collection.

Entertainment Weekly (No. 817/818, p.147) - "[T]he pioneering new-wavers' intricate mix...still feels novel--even downright fresh--25 years later..." - Grade: B+ Uncut (p.105) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A]n emotional, rather than a sonic, sequel to TECHNIQUE....The most affecting songs here are about second chances, reaffirming commitments and the terrible seduction of straying." One of the best cd in years Two friends recommended this cd to me as a must-have. It was with some skepticism that I followed their advice. Although I was always a fan of New Order, I always felt that their cds tended to have a few great songs and the rest I could take or leave. Waiting for the Siren's Call, however, is one of those cds where the more you listen to it, the more songs there are that become your new favorite. This cd, to me, is the perfect blend of old and new sounds. Listening to it evokes great memories of all-night clubbing in the 80s, yet at the same time there is a freshness that is absent from the new music of so many "old" artists. It is aslo a great example of why bands should keep making whole cds and not just rely on singles, as the songs are woven together so nicely. I couldn't recommend this cd more highly. New Order Rocks!! This new album is simply incredible. If you liked their last album "Get Ready" this is a step up. Very melodic groove oriented rock tracks, with all the sound and style of vintage New Order rolled in.Bernard Sumners vocals are great and he sounds really into it. Clearly one of their best albums. Waiting For The Sirens' Call album
$12.25 Package includes THREE IMAGINARY BOYS (1979) and RARITIES 1977-1979.
The 2004 US release of THREE IMAGINARY BOYS was a momentous event for stateside Cure fans, as it marked the first time the band's 1979 debut album had ever been available on CD in America. Equally enticing is the bonus disc containing '77-'79 demos, live tracks, and other rarities. The Cure's first US release was 1980's BOYS DON'T CRY, which replaced a number of TIB's tracks with previously non-LP singles, presenting a significantly different picture of the band.
Far from the cloudy, effects-drenched goth-pop sound that later became its trademark, the Cure is in stripped-down mode here, delivering fairly straight-ahead post-punk tunes suggestive of a less angst-ridden Joy Division or a funkless Gang of Four. The stark, rhythm-guitar-dominated sound makes ...

If you ever observed (or were) a pale depressed-looking teenager dressed entirely in black, sitting in the corner scribbling frantically into a marble bound notebook, then you already understand the Cure. In the 1980s, the Cure provided the soundtrack for an entire generation of misfit toys, and if SEVENTEEN SECONDS was a wake-up call for the dispossessed, FAITH is the daily affirmation. Scaled back down to a three-piece with the loss of keyboardist ...

Waiting For The Sirens' Call CD music
$14.15 Northern Picture Library's short lifespan and attendant small discography have led to the band being considered the poor stepchild of the Robert Wratten and associates family tree. It's an unfair judgment, though, since in ways Wratten and his then bandmates Annemari Davies and Mark Dobson, all having stuck together following the winding-up of the Field Mice, perhaps were at their most creative musically here. The Field Mice themselves had never hidden their many sources of inspiration, but it was on Alaska that, arguably, sound was just as important as lyrics, with many numbers being instrumentals or wordless compositions (such as the opening "Untitled No. 1," consisting solely of a cappella vocals from Davies). In combining that album with the Love Song for the Dead Che single -- itself reflecting another touchstone, ...
