Alternately acidic and lovelorn lyrics are delivered in a devastatingly affectless deadpan that drives home the power behind the sentiments without shoving them down the listener's throat. At the same time, the sonic template established on Mann's previous solo albums is expanded slightly (the soulful "King of the Jailhouse" could be a contender for a Solomon Burke cover version), even as it shies away from overtly hook-driven arrangements. Ultimately, THE FORGOTTEN ARM marks a maturation for a performer already well beyond her artistic adolescence.
Another chapter in former Til Tuesday vocalist Aimee Mann's ongoing saga, which could be called "How to Successfully Operate Outside the Mainstream Music Industry," THE FORGOTTEN ARM is full of the bittersweet songcraft that has become synonymous with Mann's name. Her blending of the introspective singer/songwriter aesthetic with a kind of postmodern power-pop approach to production has already yielded a number of impressive albums, but this feels like a further distillation and refinement of her style.
Personnel: Aimee Mann (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Jeff Trott (electric guitar, baritone guitar, mandolin); Julian Coryell (slide guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Jebin Bruni (keyboards); Paul Bryan (bass instrument, background vocals); Victor Indrizzo (drums, cowbells, percussion); Jay Bellerose (drums, percussion); West End Horns.
Rolling Stone (p.72) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[The songs] combine singer-songwriter clarity, L.A. harmonies and melancholy piano into a convincing package." Entertainment Weekly (No. 817/818, p.147) - "[Mann] has gone conceptual with this "novella" about two hard-luck lovers crisscrossing 1970s America..." - Grade: B Uncut (p.112) - 4 stars out of 5 - "Songs unfold as complex relationships, with attendant euphoria, doubt and internal demons." $18.99 The remastered DISRAELI GEARS is also available in its entirety on the 4 disc set THOSE WERE THE DAYS.
Recorded in the U.S. in a three-and-a-half day flurry of inspired activity before the band members' visas expired, DISRAELI GEARS continued to present the legendary, unprecedented rock power-trio acrobatics pioneered by Cream on their debut FRESH CREAM. The acronymic "SWLABR (She Walked Like a Bearded Rainbow)" for instance, featured some of the band's most fiery instrumental interplay. The album, with its eye-catching day-glo cover, was produced by Felix Pappalardi (who went on to co-found the Cream-inspired Mountain) and once again featured collaborations between singer/bassist Jack Bruce and lyric poet Pete Brown. The Top Five hit "Sunshine Of Your Love," however, was written by Brown and Eric Clapton. That iconic riff-rocker, along with the slinky, bluesy "Strange Brew," and the mythographic, wah-wah stomper "Tales of Brave Ulysses" was a staple of rock radio forever after, making DISRAELI GEARS one of the seminal '60s rock albums. Despite the good humor suggested by the jokey a capella reading of "Mother's Lament," however, all was far from peace and love in the Cream camp at the time, as internal and external pressures broke up the band by the end of 1968.
Intense Cream fans and collectors might be disappointed in the two-CD deluxe edition of Disraeli Gears for offering little in the way of previously unreleased material. There is a lot of extra stuff here, mind you, which makes it a nice expansion of the group's best and most focused album. There's the original album in both stereo and mono; two outtakes ...
