| | Russian Futurists Our Thickness CD Russian Futurists Discography of CDs
Matthew Hart's third album as the Russian Futurists, Our Thickness offers more of his bedroom-recorded symphonic pop, albeit with a little more focus and polish than his earlier work had. Hart's way with pop melodies and intricate, largely electronic arrangements have drawn fairly accurate comparisons to Magnetic Fields, but the Russian Futurists' music is even more similar to the work of Rob Crow's Optiganally Yours project; both feature quirky yet oddly elegant arrangements and sweet, boyish vocals. Not that Hart's music is derivative -- after all, not too many songs feature swanky pianos and honking Canadian geese, but "Our Pen's Out of Ink" begins with both. The Russian Futurists' music is bigger and lusher than that of Hart's most easily recognizable influences; in fact, his productions and arrangements are so expansive and detailed that they tend to overwhelm his songs, at least on the first few listens. Hart's vocals are often buried under layers and layers of other sounds, which adds to Our Thickness' blurry, impressionistic feeling. It's an undeniably pretty sound, particularly on "Why You Gotta Do That Thing?" and "Sentiments vs. Syllables," but sometimes it makes Our Thickness a little distant to embrace initially. The slightly more down-to-earth tracks, such as "Paul Simon" and "Incandescent Hearts" are more immediate but still plenty atmospheric, suggesting a cuter, quirkier spin on the Postal Service's breezy indie electronica. There's also an AM pop quality to Hart's songs -- you can hear bits and pieces of forgotten '60s and '70s bubblegum pop hits in all of his songs, and especially on "Hurtin' 4 Certain" and "2 Dots on a Map," both of which sound utterly fresh and naggingly familiar at the same time. Homespun creativity has rarely sounded bigger -- or better -- than it does on Our Thickness. ~ Heather Phares
Personnel: Liane DeLotbiniere (vocals); Brian McCarthy, Shawn Ostapchuk (acoustic guitar).

$6.09 Since Crazy Horse first came to public attention as the backing band for Neil Young in concert and on his albums Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and After the Gold Rush, it makes sense to expect that the band on its own would play something similar to the hard guitar rock and country-rock heard on those albums, albeit without Young's distinctively quirky singing and songwriting, and that is what one hears to a large extent on the debut album Crazy Horse. (Although this is their first recording under that name, core members Danny Whitten, Billy Talbot, and Ralph Molina have appeared previously on record ...

$18.59 After one listen to Supergroupies' self-titled debut record, you might start taking down some posters on your bedroom wall to make room for their glammy faces. The bandmembers hail from Sweden, deck themselves out in makeup, sport matching platinum blond feather cuts, and even rock the occasional feather boa. But all fears of a hair metal revival are quashed by the opening notes of the album's opener, "Give It All You Got," which rocks hard but in the power pop manner of vintage Redd Kross, not Poison. To that end, the band is definitely more Sweet than Kiss, more Hanna-Barbera than Headbangers Ball, more bubblegum than Jack Daniels. About the only recent group to have anything truly in common with Supergroupies is Tsar (the Tsar of their debut album, that is, not the punks of Band-Girls-Money) and maybe, in a stretch, the Darkness. The album is a nonstop blitz of hooks, huge choruses, flashy guitar solos, handclaps, and endearingly silly lyrics. Kim Simon has a perfectly brash teenage croon, the production is glossy but packs a real punch, and the band's energy never flags. The high quality of the songs never drops off, either, as nearly every one is a perfect blast of glittery nonsense. The best of them are quite spectacular, and in a perfect world the effervescent "Bouncin'" would be a huge smash, teenage girls would be screaming Beatlemania style ...
| | Spo Passion & Sacrifice CD (2008)
Our Thickness songs
$9.35 Who is Spo?Spo is a Latin Hip-Hop Producer and Music Artist. He is the first break-through artist on Calente Records. His debut album "Passion & Sacrifice" was produced and written by Spo. In the 1990's through early 2000's Spo was influenced by the music of Tupac Shakur, Christopher "Biggie" Wallace, and Christopher "Big Pun" Rios. In 2001, Spo would meet up with local music producers from the chicagoland region. Shortly thereafter, Spo completed his hip-hop demo cd. With completion of this demo, Spo displayed and established himself as a lyrical artist. Spo then would compete in various freestyle rap contests to show his lyrical ability. Recognized locally and regionally as having musical talent, Spo still grew to be unsatisfied with the beats on the demo cd. Not wanting to wait around to find producers who could give him the beats he needed for his music. ...
