Part of Capitol's Las Vegas Centennial Collection, Live from Las Vegas features Ol' Blue Eyes, singer Frank Sinatra, performing in December of 1986 at the Golden Nugget casino. Nicknamed "the Dungeon" by Sinatra because of the room's small dimensions, the Theatre Ballroom at the Golden Nugget was actually designed for Sinatra and led to a pleasant intimacy between him and the audience. Having recovered a month earlier from an illness that put him in the hospital, Sinatra was in good spirits when he took the stage, and his chipper attitude is evident. Kicking things off with a bright and swinging version of "I've Got the World On a String," Sinatra proceeds to breeze through the evening in classic form, his burnished baritone having diminished little with age. The same could be said for his legendary swinger's wit when, midway through the set during some banter with the audience, Sinatra learns a husband and wife are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and proclaims, "Let's take him out and get him bombed!" Needless to say, the audience loves it. ~ Matt Collar
Frank Sinatra would still be a cultural icon even if he had never set foot on a Las Vegas stage. Yet, in many ways, Sinatra is synonymous with Vegas. In 1951, he began a run that would last 43 years--mostly at the Sands, the hotel that would itself become a monument to his greatness. During those years Sinatra gave hundreds of dynamic performances, both at the Sands and elsewhere, and this concert, recorded at the intimate Golden Nugget venue in 1986, is one of them.
Backed by a large ensemble, complete with horns and strings, Sinatra rolls through many of his signature numbers, including "My Way," "I've Got You under My Skin," and "New York, New York." Sinatra also turns out other standards in his inimitable fashion, with "Luck Be a Lady," "I've Got a Crush on You," and "Mack the Knife" among them. Old Blue Eyes is in fine voice, and the inclusion of between-song banter makes listening to LIVE FROM LAS VEGAS feel like the next best thing to being there. The disc works nicely as a tribute to the glittering city, and a document of Sinatra's skill and charisma.JazzTimes (p.111) - "Sinatra remains impressively robust..."

3 stars Not a Very Good FS Album
FS sounds like he is over the hill on this album. Not a very good FS Album. Songs are all popular songs, but not very well sung.

1 star To be Frank
Firstly I'd like to comment on the Quality of the recording. I can only say that it resembled the kind of quality that I would expect to get from a walkman dangling in a toilet. What about the singing? Well I have been a lifelong fan of Mr Sinatra and for me he could do no wrong, until now. I can honestly say that this was Frank at his lowest ebb. The magic had gone. In fact after eagerly awaiting this CD I couldn't bear to listen to more than about half of it.So I'm sorry my advice (though you probably wont print this) to all fans is give this one a miss. If he were alive he would not have allowed its release.

5 stars A star for ever
I liked this album, the songs, the voice, even if Frank Sinatra's voice was too old with all the consequences. I agree with other people saying that during 1956-1959 the Sinatra's live performances were better. However, my personal opinion is that Sinatra live/radio appearances during the 1940s were the best of his career. I wish one day to be released all the unreleased songs of the 1940s.

3 stars For hardcore fans only
I always get excited about anything that comes out of the Old Blue Eyes' vaults. Thing is, what I'd like to get my hands on is more live stuff from Frank's golden age, say around 1956-59? Now, this newly released Golden Nugget gig brings nothing new to the legend and should appeal to hard core fans only. As far as this 43 year old Sinatra fan is concerned, voice wise and attitude wise the best of Sinatra live remains Reprise's 1966 Sinatra at the sands. Now, THAT's a killer.

3 stars MIXED QUALITY NUGGET
As a self styled archivist and devotee of Sinatra since the early 50's; I - like so many - were looking forward to this release, due to the amount of material lying in studio vaults and elswhere of so many live concerts. performances. The selection of songs were excellent and the performances were very acceptable for a concert of his later years....The problems were virtually all technical.....Sinatra's voice often atlow level..some of the introdutions and numbers in mono with others in stereo...Orchestra balance OK although a little less treble would have been better... I suspect this CD was taken from several concerts.....The technicians did a poor job of remastering - especially in this limitless digital age.....Had it been technically better, I'm sure it would have passed as an essential collector's 'gem'. An unreleased recording of Dean Martin live at the Sands hotel circa 1967 should have any fun-loving hipster's tail wagging, but tell him it's the late show and his head will explode.
