STATE OF MIND marks the arrival of a major new pop talent. Born in New Mexico and based in New York, singer/songwriter/guitarist Raul Midon has a sound that combines the R&B and soul of Stevie Wonder with the potent folk of Richie Havens. (Wonder actually contributes harmonica to the gentle "Expressions of Love" here) Blind from birth, Midon approaches his acoustic-guitar playing with added tactile sense, creating a percussive-yet-melodic sound that is immediately engaging and perfectly complements his high, clear tenor voice. Not content to settle too much into any one style, Midon conjures up a reggae vibe on "Keep on Hoping" (a duet with Jason Mraz), tips his hat to James Taylor on "Sittin' in the Middle," and belts out "I Would Do Anything" over a dense array of Afro-Cuban percussion. The dynamic STATE OF MIND is a bold, assured album by a charismatic and promising performer.

The Best New Artist in 2005! The first time I heard Raul Midon was on a sample CD from Jazziz Magazine. Our smooth jazz radio station started playing another hit off this album, so I was compelled to buy his CD. This is now my favorite CD this year and Raul Midon is an incredible vocalist and guitarist that should be recognized and heard. His album contains hit after hit and the more you hear it, the more founder one appreciates this man's lyrics and talents. Outstanding Performer! I saw Raul Midon Live when he was the opening act for Al Green at Chicago's House of Blues last May '05.
This guy blew us all away with his music. IMHO, he was a tough act to follow (AL Green knows how to pick his opening acts)!

Purchase State Of Mind CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Elliott Smith Xo CD (1998)
State Of Mind
$11.99 The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.
The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, but this is no sunny Cali-pop album. Leavening ...

| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
State Of Mind
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems ...
| | John Legend Get Lifted CD (2004)
State Of Mind
$9.29 Six years after cutting his musical teeth as a teen, tickling the ivories on the classic Lauryn Hill single "Everything Is Everything," John Stephens popped up everywhere in 2004, going by the bold name of John Legend. His ubiquity was unsurprising, since he was taken under the wing of Kanye West, the year's breakout success, who tabbed Legend "the future of hip-hop." It's an interesting label for a man whose elegant voice and schooled songwriting conjures up Bill Withers and Al Green, but sometimes the future intersects with the past in a manner transcending revival.
Legend drops his debut, GET LIFTED, into the center of the neo-soul universe, ...
