Original Soundtrack/Nouvelle Vague: Marc Collins, Oliver Libaus. Additional personnel: Marina Lima, Melanie Pain, Eloisia, Camille, Alex , Silja, Sir Alice, Daniella D'Ambrosio (vocals). The best compliment that can be paid to Nouvelle Vague's self-titled debut album: it isn't as arch and smirking as a collection of bossa nova versions of new wave classics by fetching French and Brazilian chanteuses would suggest. Based on the concept alone, Nouvelle Vague seems similar to the work of jokesters like the Mike Flowers Pops or Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine, but though the album is definitely playful, it works on a sincere level enough of the time to be more than just a goof. In fact, Nouvelle Vague's best moments are a tribute to how well written the words and melodies of these songs are; that they can withstand, and even thrive in, such different arrangements is no small feat. Smooth, smoky ballads, such as the opening track, "Love Will Tear Us Apart," provide many of the album's highlights. The Cure's "A Forest" gets a tropical twist, complete with jungle sound effects, while the Sisters of Mercy's "Marian" remains as dark as ever but is now much more delicate -- call it gotha nova. On the other hand, the cover of the Dead Kennedys' "Too Drunk to Fuck" is a giggly, sassy, mischievous standout that bears virtually no resemblance to the original. Likewise, the serpentine version of Killing Joke's "Psyche" is radically different from the original, nor does it quite fit in with the rest of Nouvelle Vague's bright, breezy feeling, but its spooky vibe makes it one of the album's most interesting tracks. Two of the best covers come from a couple of the least well-known bands on the collection: Tuxedomoon's "In a Manner of Speaking" is transformed into a gorgeous, completely convincing torch song, and Josef K's "Sorry for Laughing" closes the album on a sweetly languid note. Not all of Nouvelle Vague is this inspired -- the version of Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough" is overly fussy, and while the covers of songs like "I Melt With You" and "Making Plans for Nigel" are nice enough, they don't have the spark of the album's best moments. But even at its worst, Nouvelle Vague is still pleasantly witty background music. This unlikely, but mostly happy, marriage of new wave and bossa nova will probably disappoint or displease purists who believe that every version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" should have the brooding intensity of the original, but everyone else can enjoy the album's playful elegance. ~ Heather Phares Ostensibly the soundtrack to Jean-Luc Godard's 1990 feature film, Nouvelle Vague is in actuality, the entire film in audio form. On two CDs, several ECM artists (Meredith Monk, David Darling, Dino Saluzzi) make brief appearances, but are usually pushed into the background by French dialogue, car horns or other extraneous noise. It makes for an extremely disjointed listening experience. ~ John Bush At a time when seemingly every band with access to an analog synthesizer and a tube of hair gel was aping the New Wave sounds of the early 1980s, NOUVELLE VAGUE put a unique spin on the phenomenon. Their self-titled album is full of covers of classic tunes by the Cure, Modern English, Depeche Mode, et al. The striking twist, however, lies in the fact that all the songs are performed in old-school bossa nova mode, the lyrics delivered in a vintage Astrud Gilberto style. The cooing, breathy vocals and gentle acoustic guitar rhythms successfully transmogrify not only the pop-friendly confections of the aforementioned ensembles, but some edgier material as well. One hasn't truly lived until one has heard the Dead Kennedys' "Too Drunk to F----" and the Undertones' "Teenage Kicks" sounding like outtakes from the GETZ/GILBERTO album. NOUVELLE VAGUE successfully reinvents its source material without descending into mere schtick.

Nouvelle Vague Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Surprise, surprise!! Nouvell Vauge was a completley new experience for me. I first heard their version of "I'll Melt With You" on a local college station in my home town, and thought "that was different." By the time I heard it again a few weeks later, I was quickly on the phone tracking down the band's info. and how to obtain the album. The rest is history. This album is a masterful piece of work blending bossanova jazz with modern day electronics. The vocals are at times hypnotizing and quite sensual. A truly beautiful album to experience. I'm already considering tracking down some more of Nouvelle Vauge's work, because of the wonderful surprise this album was. I was in desperate need of something different and thankfully I found it. A great addition to my collection that will see frequent use. Submitted by jon_wojtowicz (Traverse City, MI,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

It shouldn't work but it does! First heard "Love Will Tear Us Apart" in a record shop and thought umm this works. Then looked at the track list and was amused to find The Clash "Guns Of Brixton" and Dead Kennedys "Too Drunk etc". As much as I didn't want to like this album let alone buy it, having been in to most of these songs first time round it really is a brilliant album. In fact XTC "Making Plans for Nigel" is one of my favorites which is odd as I never really liked it much before. If you don't know any of these songs buy this album with a clear conscience if you do then just buy it anyway and tell your mates your Mum got it for you for Christmas! $7.55 PiL's fourth album took three years to reach fruition, much of this time spent gigging and changing personnel. The initial recordings of the follow-up to The Flowers of Romance included the nucleus of Lydon and Keith Levene; Martin Atkins was asked to stay on board, and he brought bassist Pete Jones with him, a mate who was helping him out with his own Brian Brain project. After those initial sessions and a few shows, both Levene and Jones quit within a month of each other. Lydon then recruited the majority of a lounge act spotted at a New Jersey Holiday Inn and toured with them, playing a set heavy on the new material. After touring, Lydon and Atkins wiped Jones and Levene off the tapes for the new record, employing faceless session musicians to fill in. The upheaval resulted in one of Lydon's worst outings, the most tentative and least powerful of PiL's recordings. A thin, shrill, wheezing horn section replaces much of Levene's guitar, and the basslines sound like Flea without the passion and chops. "This Is Not a Love Song," though accessible enough for the charts, is best left in the year of its origin. Surprisingly for Lydon, the colorful tune has a simple beat and is easy to dance to, but lacks guts. "The Pardon," like a couple other songs on the record, sounds like a bad Flowers of Romance outtake with "modern" production. With Atkins' relentless clippity-cloppity drums and Lydon's bite-free stream-of-consciousness rambling, it eventually fades into the background as a nagging drone. Closer "The Order of Death" saves This Is What You Want... from being a total wreck, a moody instrumental with a repetitive vocal hook from Lydon and a creepy synth line. Recorded for Cop Killer, a movie starring Harvey Keitel and Lydon himself, it's fittingly soundtrack-ish. (The song didn't end up being used in the movie.) Notably, Levene, who at that point owned half of the Public Image Limited name, released the version of This Is What You Want... with him and Jones present as the pseudo-bootleg Commercial Zone, on the short-lived PIL Records. It actually preceded the official version's release by months, and a second issue followed later in the year with a slightly different track listing. ~ Andy Kellman PiL's fourth album took three years to reach fruition for a number of reasons. $16.45 A born musician, singer/composer/multi-instrumentalist, Jim Fidler lives on the north atlantic island of Newfoundland. In his childhood he studied classical piano and music theory at the Maritime Conservatory of Music In Halifax, Nova Scotia as an honours student and his been involved in various musical projects since playing and producing everything from bluegrass to reggae, but, his main passion has always been Newfoundland and Labrador; her people and her culture. As an independent recording artist, his first completely self-written, self-produced solo effort, GYPSY, on which Jim sings and plays twelve different instruments, has won awards for Album of the Year and Independent Album of the Year in Newfoundland And Labrador, a nomination for an East Coast Music award in the category "roots/traditional", and CBC Radio's national program Roots and Wings selected GYPSY as one of the top 25 albums from around the world in the fall of 1996. In 1997 after hearing the album, Iona Records President, Ronnie Simpson signed Jim to a European record deal, the first for a solo Newfoundland artist.Mark Vaughan Jackson of the Evening Telegram writes: There is no musical genre or label that fits this album. There are influences from Newfoundland, Jamaica, North Africa, Portugal and Spain, Ireland, the Gypsy tradition, folk and others. But they are not just Fidler's versions of these musical styles - he has taken them, interpreted them and then used some of their influences to flavour music that seemingly comes straight from his soul.At the risk of ...
