Adam Rogers' third Criss Cross CD as a leader focuses exclusively on his challenging original works. Joining the guitarist are four superb musicians: tenor saxophonist Chris Potter, pianist Edward Simon, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Clarence Penn. The many twists within the opener, "Labyrinth," are finessed with ease by the group, while Rogers adds a bit of distortion to his instrument for the intense "Tyranny of Fixed Numbers." The extended workout of "The Maya" is built upon an ostinato bass pattern, with Rogers and Potter playing in unison until the piece opens up and the bassist's role is freed; then the leader works his magic with an inventive solo. "Apparitions" is truly a haunting melody as Rogers and Potter introduce the theme, with Penn gradually adding background percussion. The finale, "Moment in Time," is an intriguing low-key ballad, omitting the piano and tenor sax, while Colley (a veteran of guitarist Jim Hall's trio) responds to the stripped-down setting with some of his best work of the session. Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden

On Apparitions, for the third time, guitarist Adam Rogers convenes band mates Ed Simon (piano), Scott Colley (bass) and Clarence Penn (drums), who also appeared on his well-received label debut, "Art Of The Invisible" (CRC #1223) and "Allegory" (CRC #124

Maia Sharp CD  (2002)

Maia Sharp occupies fertile ground on her Concord debut, gathering strands of R&B, pop, and jazz and tying them together with her talent as a singer/songwriter. It many ways her eclectic approach harks back to a number of Sharp's early-'70s influences, like Jackson Browne, James Taylor, and Joni Mitchell. These influences, along with her saxophone work, even evoke the sound and style of these artists. While this may make her difficult to categorize in a contemporary market, it doesn't make her difficult to enjoy. Her airy vocals are buoyed by full, though non-busy, arrangements of electric guitars, saxophones, and percussion. The album opens with "Crimes of the Witness," co-written with the singer's father, Randy Sharp. While the song dates back to 1998-1999, lyrics like, "You pray a prayer and pledge allegiance" strike a contemporary note of patriotism in the summer of 2002. Sharp, however, is more concerned with society's have-nots than with jumping on the bandwagon. Cuts like "Long Way Home" ...

This third installment in the series specially crafted by Collectables for WSNI FM focuses on the greatest hits of one of the most revered labels in pop music: Motown. With every single one of the 25 songs contained herein being either a chart-topper or a major hit, it's hard to refute this as nothing more than an extremely well-sequenced compilation covering Motown's glory years, and at an economically sensible price, it serves as an ideal starting point to those unfamiliar with Motown's vast arsenal of soulful hits. Simply outstanding from start to finish.~ Rob Theakston Collectables' 2003 compilation WCBS FM: Motown, Soul and Rock n Roll - Motown delivers 25 tracks of pure Motown gold. It was put together by Joe McCoy from WCBS FM and plays like what one might hope the radio would sound like in heaven. Every song is a hit and the disc flows like a river of sweet champagne. The songs are a fine mix of up-tempo dancefloor fillers like the Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman" and the Contours' "Do You Love Me" and heartbroken ballads like the Temptations' "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" and Jimmy Ruffin's "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted." The only flaw in the presentation is the duplication of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Both Gladys Knight's and Marvin Gaye's version are included at the expense of some other Motown classic. Still this is a set that is destined to get listeners up on their feet and dancing or at very least singing along at the top of their lungs. There are tons of Motown collections out there but this is one of the best. ~ Tim Sendra KFRC Oldies - Motown, Soul & Great Rock n' Roll: Rock n' Roll is a varied and quite solid 25-song collection of chart-toppers from the '60s compiled by Joe McCoy of WCBS. Now why a DJ from WCBS compiled a disc that is billed as a presentation of KFRC oldies is a question that will only nag at the most retentive of music fans. The rest will just be happy to enjoy the music, as it is first-rate from beginning to end. McCoy draws tracks from many different styles: folk-rock (the Mamas & the Papas' "Monday, Monday," Scott Mackenzie's "San Francisco"), girl group (the Angels' "My Boyfriend's Back," Lesley Gore's "It's My Party"), British Invasion (Manfred Mann's "Do Wah Diddy Diddy," the Troggs' "Wild Thing"), and good old American pop (the Beach Boys' "Help Me Rhonda," the Turtles' "Happy Together," the Lovin' Spoonful's "Do You Believe in Magic?"). Any disc with those last three songs on it is worth owning, but wait, there's more! Len Barry's jubilant "1-2-3," the Guess Who's moody "These Eyes," Spiral Starecase's "More Today Than Yesterday," and Tom Jones' "She's a Lady" ...

Motor City Serenade
Stewart Francke Motor City Serenade CD  (2005) (Import) United Kingdom

Apparitions album
CD $21.19  Audio Samples
Stewart Francke's Motor City Serenade is a daring exercise in musical anthropology, cultural license, and Detroit aesthetic savvy. Francke has been on the scene a long time, regarded highly in Detroit, but basically underappreciated elsewhere. That may change with the issue of this album, released by Great Britain's Zane label -- the crew that released great titles by Delaney Bramlett, Ellis Hooks, and Eddie Hinton. Motor City Serenade pulls out all the stops creatively. There are layers of singers -- including the gospel group Commissioned, Barb Payton, and living rock legend Mitch Ryder -- elegant yet edgy strings, spiky, taut horns, funky keyboards, and popping guitars in a mix so utterly open and ringing, it saturates the listening space in a swirl of color, texture, and grit. But Motown isn't the only sound at work in Francke's mix; there is also the romantic sophistication of Brian Wilson and the wild abandon of Jack Nitszche. The title track is a lullaby to Detroit, romantically name-dropping some of its heroes, from Marvin Gaye and Nolan Strong to techno's "holy trinity" (Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson) -- all of it fueled by Motown's Funk Brothers backing Francke. HIs singing voice has grown deeper and wider over the years. It contains a kind of reckless maturity and nuance that is the badge of experience and beneat- the-skin expression. He's doesn't worry about anything but getting the song to be true to itself as song. He's got the necessary soul chops, but he is also a fine rock singer -- when he and Ryder cut loose in "Upon Seeing Simone," over a rollicking horn section, they send chills down the spine. But sonics and vocal prowess only tell part of the story; Francke's true gift in his ability to write words so utterly and poetically impure, and melodies that project them from the mix to the consciousness of the listener. For Francke, backyards, street cruising, the triumphs and tragedies of family, and fleeting love are all wrapped in the same bundle, all cards in the same slippery deck. He can find the divine in the heat of a ...
