Vic Juris, a veteran cool-toned guitarist with a harmonically advanced style, swings his way through a variety of straight-ahead and introspective material with his trio/quartet. Bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Tim Horner are both subtle in their support and interplay with the guitarist. David Liebman, on tenor and soprano, is a welcome guest on some of the selections, but the main focus is on Juris. "A Second Look," one of five Juris originals, is catchy, while "Barney K." is an effective tribute to the late Barney Kessel. Among the other more memorable selections are a swinging rendition of "So in Love," an odd reharmonized ballad version of "All the Things You Are," a rare revival of Keith Jarrett's "Shades of Jazz," and his bossa nova "Little Brian." Juris' dry tone and subtle creativity are easy to take for granted at first but they grow in appeal with each listen. ~ Scott Yanow
When Mel Bay Records was launched in 2004, signing Vic Juris was one of the primary goals of the new jazz-guitar label. Known for his fluent lyricism, subtle phrasing and engaging harmonies, Vic adds his remarkable touch to the growing Mel Bay roster wit
Personnel: Vic Juris (guitar); David Liebman (saxophone); Jay Anderson (bass instrument); Tim Horner (drums).
Additional personnel: Kate Baker (vocals).
JazzTimes (p.115) - "[Juris's] tone - effected subtly with a haze of reverb and chorus - renders his melodies as mirages of sound, dreamy and never clamoring for attention." Vic Juris Second Look Songs | 1. | Second Look, A |

| | Ted Greene Solo Guitar CD (1977)
Second Look
$13.85 Chances are that most jazz fans may not have heard of jazz guitarist Ted Greene, though it is not for his lack of abilities. One of a handful of players able to command attention during an album's worth of unaccompanied performances, Greene evidently has not pursued many recording opportunities following this 1977 debut, which was first issued by the PMP label. Like Joe Pass, Bucky Pizzarelli, Martin Taylor, and a few other guitar masters, Greene is adept enough to accompany himself by playing a melodic line and supporting rhythm, such that novices will think they are listening to two guitarists. Most of this session is devoted to standards like "Ol' Man River," "Just Friends," and a medley of "Summertime" and "It Ain't Necessarily So," all played with finesse and imagination. He avoids the hackneyed approach to songs of more recent vintage, such as "Send in the Clowns" and "Watch What Happens," by utilizing creative voicings. This session was finally reissued in 2004 by ...
| | Adam Rogers Apparitions CD (2005) (Import) Netherlands
Second Look
$16.39 Adam Rogers' third Criss Cross CD as a leader focuses exclusively on his challenging original works. Joining the guitarist are four superb musicians: tenor saxophonist Chris Potter, pianist Edward Simon, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Clarence Penn. The many twists within the opener, "Labyrinth," are finessed with ease by the group, while Rogers adds a bit of distortion to his instrument for the intense "Tyranny of Fixed Numbers." The extended workout of "The Maya" is built upon an ostinato bass pattern, with Rogers and Potter playing in unison until the piece opens up and the bassist's role is freed; then the leader works his magic with an inventive solo. "Apparitions" is truly a haunting melody as Rogers and Potter introduce the theme, with Penn gradually adding background percussion. The finale, "Moment in Time," is an intriguing low-key ballad, omitting the piano and ...
| | Pat Martino Remember: A Tribute To Wes Montgomery CD (2006)
Second Look
$11.69 Pat Martino and Wes Montgomery were two of the most famous guitarists to emerge out of the '60s jazz scene, an era that saw the guitar raised to the status of saxophones and trumpets. Martino and Montgomery's styles, however, were quite different, one rapid-fire post-bop, the other blues-based hard bop. This doesn't mean, however, that Martino wasn't -- like everyone else -- influenced ...
