When Mel Bay Records was launched in 2004, signing Vic Juris was one of the primary goals of the new jazz-guitar label. Known for his fluent lyricism, subtle phrasing and engaging harmonies, Vic adds his remarkable touch to the growing Mel Bay roster wit
Personnel: Vic Juris (guitar); David Liebman (saxophone); Jay Anderson (bass instrument); Tim Horner (drums). Additional personnel: Kate Baker (vocals). Vic Juris, a veteran cool-toned guitarist with a harmonically advanced style, swings his way through a variety of straight-ahead and introspective material with his trio/quartet. Bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Tim Horner are both subtle in their support and interplay with the guitarist. David Liebman, on tenor and soprano, is a welcome guest on some of the selections, but the main focus is on Juris. "A Second Look," one of five Juris originals, is catchy, while "Barney K." is an effective tribute to the late Barney Kessel. Among the other more memorable selections are a swinging rendition of "So in Love," an odd reharmonized ballad version of "All the Things You Are," a rare revival of Keith Jarrett's "Shades of Jazz," and his bossa nova "Little Brian." Juris' dry tone and subtle creativity are easy to take for granted at first but they grow in appeal with each listen. ~ Scott Yanow
JazzTimes (p.115) - "[Juris's] tone - effected subtly with a haze of reverb and chorus - renders his melodies as mirages of sound, dreamy and never clamoring for attention." Vic Juris Second Look Songs Purchase Second Look CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Jimmy Bruno Solo CD (2004)

| | Pat Martino Remember: A Tribute To Wes Montgomery CD (2006)
Second Look
$11.69 Personnel: Pat Martino (guitar); Dave Kikoski (piano); John Patitucci (bass instrument); Scott Allan Robinson (drums); Daniel Sadownick (percussion). Pat Martino and Wes Montgomery were two of the most famous guitarists to emerge out of the '60s jazz scene, an era that saw the guitar raised to the status of saxophones and trumpets. Martino and Montgomery's styles, however, were quite different, one rapid-fire post-bop, the other blues-based hard bop. This doesn't mean, however, that Martino wasn't -- like everyone else -- influenced by Montgomery. Martino's Remember: ...

| | Paul Desmond Bridge Over Troubled Water CD (2008) Reissue; Remastered
Second Look
$8.29 BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER is jazz saxophone icon Paul Desmond's homage to Simon and Garfunkel. Originally released in 1970 on A&M Records, Paul Desmond's BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER is the label's last release to bear the influence of producer Creed Taylor. Like Taylor's earlier A&M albums with Desmond, Wes Montgomery and others, BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER is a complex blend of cool jazz, easy listening, and pop, featuring lush orchestrations behind Desmond's alto sax and Herbie Hancock's electric piano. Taken entirely from the Paul Simon songbook, the 10 cuts range from a hymn-like reading of the title track to a spunky Latin-jazz take on "Cecilia." The 2008 Verve reissue features no bonus tracks, but has excellent remastered sound. Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water was the hottest album in the land in 1970, and Paul Simon's tunes from that and their earlier albums unexpectedly find a congenial advocate in Paul Desmond. Against the odds as determined by bopsters, Desmond finds something beautiful, wistful, and/or sly to say in each of these ten tunes, backed by Herbie Hancock's Rhodes electric piano and a set of ravishing, occasionally ...
