The post-millennium proliferation of bluegrass performers on labels like Pinecastle and Lonesome Day shows no signs of letting up. And with a healthy market, listeners can choose between traditional, progressive, and the mushy middle. Mandolinist-singer Darrell Webb falls on the more traditional end of the pendulum, proudly showcasing the country twang in his vocal style on Behind the Scenes. He deepens the impression of good, old-fashioned music by relying on an even dozen songs that also lean toward tradition. The album gets a good start with the bouncy "Beg You Little Darling Not to Cry," and there's plenty of hot picking by Webb and guitarist Ron Stewart. While Webb handles most of the vocals on Behind the Scenes, he lets Dolly Parton take the lead on "Cold," a song she wrote. Parton's in good voice, and there's some great dobro work by Phil Leadbetter. There's also a nice take on "The Lonesome Fugitive," a song that Merle Haggard turned into a hit in the late '60s. Webb and friends' version is much more spry, driven forward by Harold Nixon's fine bass work. The album closes with "Lover's Lane," a lively song with a depressing lyric borrowed from the Carter Family. Behind the Scenes is an enjoyable album with solid picking and singing, and a fine introduction to Darrell Webb. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

5 stars Bluegrass with plenty of vim and vigor
Playing Time – 37:07 -- Don’t know about you but I like my bluegrass with plenty of vim and vigor. That’s exactly the kind of tasty material that Darrell Webb serves up. However, I’m curious as to why he didn’t lay in some vocal harmony on the opening cut, “I Beg You Little Darling Not to Cry,” which was featured on Volume 73 of Prime Cuts of Bluegrass. Webb is an expert guitarist, accomplished mandolin-player and also a vocalist with a great range. His experience includes working with JD Crowe & the New South, and Lonesome River Band. He replaced Dan Tyminski the first time that Dan left LRB and has done a couple stints with J.D. Crowe. Webb also has appeared on a couple of Dolly Parton’s albums. Now, Darrell is playing in the popular bluegrass band called Wildfire (with Phil Leadbetter, Robert Hale, Curt Chapman and Carry Crabtree). Darrell’s reputation as a songwriter is also well-known as some of his songs appear on CDs by Lonesome River Band and Lou Reid & Carolina. His originals on this CD include “Mother’s Hand,” “Imagine That,” “Behind the Scenes,” and “Get on the Path.” Back in 1998, Darrell’s first solo album, “Webbsite,” came out and was received with much critical acclaim. This West Virginian’s latest endeavor, “Behind the Scenes” features a great cast -- Ron Stewart, Randy Kohrs, Beth Lawrence, Harold Nixon, Phil Leadbetter, Dolly Parton, Dwight McCall, Michael Cleveland, Richard Bennet, Shannon Slaughter, Megan Mccormick, Angela Oudean, Keisha Gillis and others. Dolly’s lead vocals are featured on her composition, “Cold,” and it’s awesome to hear Stewart and Webb singing low harmonies with her. Personal favorite tracks are “Thank You Father For My Dad” and “Imagine That.” I guess the only thing I didn’t really care much for were the CD’s front and back out-of-focus photographs. This album deserved better graphics to correlate with the music’s professionalism. However, I’m sure that a market test indicated that a majority (as well as Darrell) liked that design for the cover of an album entitled “Behind the Scenes.” It’s definitely different than anything Lonesome Day Records has put out to date. Just take my advice and don’t judge this book by its out-of-focus cover. Darrell Webb’s zeal for bluegrass is indisputable. What’s evident on this CD are the soaring vocals, nimble-fingered breaks, and perfectly piquant songs that convey plenty of good taste. I can see why Darrell has been called one of bluegrass music’s favorite entertainers. This album really packs a punch. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bleugrass Now)

Essential Glen Campbell
Essential Glen Campbell CD  (1995) Import

Behind The Scenes album
CD $11.65  5 stars
The first serious attempt to explore the full range of Glen Campbell's legacy on Capitol Records might have worked better in a more coherent and cohesive three- (or four-) CD box than in this strangely disorganized series of three separate CDs. Volume one of the Essential series sets the tone for all three CDs, beautiful remasterings of the hits, some excellent lesser-selling singles and outstanding album tracks, and a handful of unreleased cuts that are, by themselves, worth the price of the disc. There are relatively few major hits here, and one of them, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," is represented paired with "I Say a Little Prayer for You" in a fine 1971 duet with Anne Murray, but that's what should have made this such a priceless collection -- it works the breadth and depth of Campbell's catalog, going all the way back to 1962, and encompasses tracks that showcase both his vocal and instrumental prowess. Thus, in between glowing remasterings of his singles and some notable album tracks covering 17 years of work, you get a brilliant acoustic instrumental workout, "Twelve Blues," showing off Campbell's prodigious guitar skills and his too-little-explored appreciation of the blues, and a rendition of "I Walk the Line" from 1967, in which he handles the song Sinatra-style (and most effectively, one might add); his previously unissued live 1975 rendition of "My Way"; and his poignant, gently swinging version of "Blue Sky Shining," done with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra in 1979. Casual listeners will be surprised by Campbell's range as a singer, while serious fans will simply want to immerse themselves in the contents from the opening note. The only flaw, and it is a big one with this series, is the producers' failure to put the music together in any rational chronological order -- a box set could have done it, but the jumping around, from decade to decade and between hits and unissued tracks, on each disc and between the three discs in this series will make some listeners dizzy just trying to decide whether or not to buy each. ~ Bruce Eder Budget price collection from EMI features 20 tracks. Copy Controlled. 2003. This British reissue of a 1987 Glen Campbell compilation would be a welcome addition to anybody's car CD library, being chock-full of just the hits, and sequenced in an innovative order that lends itself to movement. All the big ones are here -- "Wichita Lineman," "Galveston," "Gentle on My Mind," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife," "Where's the Playground Susie," "Rhinestone Cowboy," and his fabled readings of "Both Sides Now," "Reason to Believe," "It's Only Make Believe," ...
