Sundazed's excellent Garage Beat '66 series doesn't lose momentum on its fifth volume, Readin' Your Will! Where the previous four installments focused almost exclusively on bands that aped the Rolling Stones and Yardbirds, this set digs into the trippier, psychedelic side of garage rock with a set of 20 tracks recorded between 1964 and 1968. There's still some straight-ahead rock & roll here, such as the Arkay IV's "Little Girl" or the Heart Beats' take on "Little Latin Lupe Lu," but there's a heavier dose of spacy harmonies, jangling guitars, fuzz tones, and swirling organs here than on previous installments of the Garage Beat '66 series. After four volumes of pile-driving garage, this comes as a welcome change of pace, particularly because there are a lot of quite excellent singles here. A lot of this leans toward the menacing side of Texas garage rock, à la 13th Floor Elevators, but there are gentler moments like the Thingies' "I'm Going Ahead" that helps make this the most musically diverse and enjoyable disc of the series. Like the other Garage Beat '66 discs, this does contain a bunch of songs that will be familiar to hardcore garage-psych collectors -- and it does contain such cult favorites as Unrelated Segments and the tremendous Zakary Thaks -- but while those collectors will love the excellent sound and liner notes here, this isn't intended solely for collectors. This, like the other entries in Garage Beat '66, is for garage-psych fans who love Nuggets and want to dig deeper without resorting to sorting through the Pebbles and Rubble series, or listening to all of the Trash Box. For those listeners, Readin' Your Will!, like the rest of Garage Beat '66 series, is an irresistible addition to their library. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Garage Beat '66 Vol. 5: Readin' Your Will! songs
$7.55 PiL's fourth album took three years to reach fruition, much of this time spent gigging and changing personnel. The initial recordings of the follow-up to The Flowers of Romance included the nucleus of Lydon and Keith Levene; Martin Atkins was asked to stay on board, and he brought bassist Pete Jones with him, a mate who was helping him out with his own Brian Brain project. After those initial sessions and a few shows, both Levene and Jones quit within a month of each other. Lydon then recruited the majority of a lounge act spotted at a New Jersey Holiday Inn and toured with them, playing a set heavy on the new material. After touring, Lydon and Atkins wiped Jones and Levene off the tapes for the new record, employing faceless session musicians to fill in.
The upheaval resulted in one of Lydon's worst outings, the most tentative and least powerful of PiL's recordings. A thin, shrill, wheezing horn section replaces much of Levene's guitar, and the basslines sound like Flea without the passion and chops. "This Is Not a Love Song," though accessible enough for the charts, is best left in the year of its origin. Surprisingly for Lydon, the colorful tune has a simple beat and is easy to dance to, but lacks guts. "The Pardon," like a couple other songs on the record, sounds like a bad Flowers of Romance outtake with "modern" production. With Atkins' relentless clippity-cloppity drums and Lydon's ...

"Say hello to the new sound, same as the old sound." About a minute into the last song, the band puts their finger on the exact reason why their 2001 album, Rock and Roll Part Three, is as good as it is. Some bands sound a lot like other bands, but Ozma practically is Weezer. It is actually hard to believe that they aren't Weezer at some moments. But this is not necessarily a bad thing; in fact, Ozma may have arguably written the best Weezer album of 2001 (and yes, the real thing also had an album come out the same year). Filled to the brim with catchy choruses, oddball lyrics, and poppy keyboards, Ozma knows this style of music like the back of their hands. "Domino Effect," "Natalie Portman," "Last Dance" -- it is all quality emo pop that is short and catchy. The only point where they really significantly depart from the Weezer sound is on "Battlescars," an epic of whiny vocals and strummed guitars that has far more in common with other indie epics, like Pavement's "Fillmore Jive." But all comparisons aside, ...
