Between the years of 1992 and 2005, the Canadian quartet Sloan released numerous studio albums and the 1999 live document 4 NIGHTS AT THE PALAIS ROYALE. Sloan's combination of chiming, hook-heavy power pop and '70s hard-rock riffing lends itself perfectly to a singles format, making A SIDES WIN: SINGLES 1992-2005 a definitive document of the band's winning charms. The set begins with "Underwhelmed," the band's debut single, and continues through the garage-y "The Good in Everyone," the sunshine pop of "Everything You've Done Wrong," the ringing melodies of "Losing California," and the sleek, infectious rock of "All Used Up."
Sloan pushes all the right buttons with its high-octane guitar rock and knack for irrepressible hooks, referencing everyone from the Beatles to Big Star to Kiss along the way. Their sunny, memorable tunes enjoyed enormous success in Canada, but Sloan never got the attention they deserved in the States. A SIDES WIN, a beautifully packaged and sequenced collection, should help rectify that situation.
The band returns with a true greatest hits package that includes 14 singles collected in chronological order from over 12 years, with 2 brand new audio studio tracks. Additional included are live performances and extended full-band interviews.
Sloan: Jay Ferguson, Patrick Pentland (vocals, guitar); Chris Murphy (vocals, bass guitar); Andrew Scott (drums).Magnet (pp.88-89) - "[N]early every track here sounds like a classic...A SIDES WIN is an infectious reminder of the Halifax quartet's way with a riff and a hook." Sides Win: Singles 1992-2005
$10.55 Pete Anderson's third solo outing has been a long time coming, and one gets the distinct impression that it's the album he's been itching to make all along. Given that Daredevil is completely instrumental, the guitar geeks already have something to salivate about. But there's much more to it than that. Anderson played the vast majority of instruments, with help in a few places from multi-instrumentalist Skip Edwards and minimal assistance from trumpeter Lee Thornberg and fiddler Donny Reed as well. There's also some string work performed by some mysterious entity know as "the Skipper." If the Latin Playboys were an instrumental country band, they would almost certainly sound something like this. While it's true that Anderson's guitaristry is signature to all he does, he understands dynamic, rhythm, and atmosphere and texture as ...

| | Teenage Fanclub Man-Made CD (2005)
Sides Win: Singles 1992-2005
$12.25 Longtime fans of Teenage Fanclub's sweet guitar pop need not fear that 2005's MAN-MADE, produced by renown experimentalist and Tortoise member John McEntire, is a radical departure from form. The band's impeccably crafted melodicism, which draws on the jangling, harmony-soaked tradition of the Byrds and Big Star, is intact. In fact, MAN-MADE, while not a progressive leap forward, may be Teenage Fanclub's most mature, focused, and sustained ...

Sides Win: Singles 1992-2005
$26.79 For lovers of pure power pop, Fountains of Wayne's 1996 arrival on the scene was a dream come true. Not only did these guys deliver the jangling guitars, stellar vocal harmonies, and jaunty beats that are the genre's hallmarks, but they added a sharply observant lyrical sense equal parts Paul McCartney and Paul Simon. What's more, their broad-reaching musical interests and production skills made them one of the few bands of their ilk to achieve stylistic diversity. Diehard FOW fans maintain that the ...

Sides Win: Singles 1992-2005
$13.69 This is the first full-length release from San Francisco-based Loquat following several locally released EPs and compilation tracks since 2002. They seem now to have fully settled into their sound, which is a pleasing amalgam of jangly guitars, gauzily pretty female vocals, polite electronic flourishes, and the occasional breakbeat. The result comes across just a bit like the Sundays, updated for the post-Massive Attack generation. Highlight tracks on It's Yours to Keep ...
