In the manner of their four-legged namesake, Oakland, California's Drunk Horse may stumble on In Tongues, but they don't fall while paying tribute to 1970s icons like Foghat, ZZ Top, and Thin Lizzy with varying degrees of success. The blistering, guitar-dueling opener, "Strange Transgressors" is among the finest of these ten tunes with the infectious, riff-tastic guitar work also scoring high marks as axe wielding frontman Elijah Eckert and lead guitarist Joel Robinow play to each other's strengths. The meandering instrumental "Grinding Teeth" and the musical identity crisis "Howard Phillips" -- which can't make up its mind if it's a metal tune or a blurring prog rocker -- don't fare as well. Still, fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd will be hard-pressed to ignore the power of "Nice Hooves." ~ John D. Luerssen

New York's 1970s punk was markedly different to that of Britain. Rather than reject the past, American groups deconstructed its forms and rebuilt them with recourse to the music's strengths. Television's leader, Tom Verlaine, professed admiration for Moby Grape and the folk rock of early Fairport Convention. Elements of the latter appear on this album's title track, which offers a thrilling instrumental break, built upon a modal scale. Verlaine's shimmering guitar style provides the set's focus, but his angular compositions are always enthralling. A sense of brooding mystery envelops the proceedings, and Marquee Moon retains its standing as one of the era's pivotal releases.

This late 2006 compilation by the Systematic label out of Berlin, with excellent mixing handled by Stephan Bodzin (who unsurprisingly appears on a number of the tracks, including the concluding one-two punch of "Marathon Man" and "Tron"), is an enjoyable though not always revelatory trip through many of the acid house leaning imprint's releases over the previous two years.
