$23.39 Ingmar Bergman has stated that THE MAGIC FLUTE had long since been an inspiration to him by the time he directed this movie version of an actual staging of Mozart's opera. In Emanuel Schikaneder's libretto--performed here in Swedish instead of German--Prince Tamino (Josef Köstlinger) is sent by the mysterious and powerful Queen of the Night (Birgit Nordin) to rescue her daughter, Pamina (Irma Urrila), from the sorcerer Sarastro (Ulrik Cold), who has kidnapped the girl. Tamino is aided on his mission by the bird catcher Papageno (Håkan Hagegård), an endearing buffoon (and arguably the opera's most popular character) who wants nothing more than to find himself a loving wife. The director presents a shortened version of the story, enhanced with a Freudian plot element (of sorts), while also giving the piece a slight overhaul for a more modern, less politically questionable feel. Bergman shows the goings-on onstage, often zooming in for close-ups of the performers' interaction with one another, interspersed with shots of individual faces in the audience. The actors were mostly chosen for their appearance and stage presence rather than their ...

$19.55 French director Benoit Jacquot (A SINGLE GIRL) adapts the famous opera by Giacomo Puccini in his film TOSCA. The stunningly dramatic opera stars--Angela Gheorghiu as Floria Tosca, Roberto Alagna as Mario Cavaradossi, and Ruggero Raimondi as Baron Scarpia--steal the show with their intense vocal range and fiery acting. The film cuts back and forth between black and white photography that shows the singers and a full orchestra recording the opera in a studio, and color photography that shows the costumed presentation, act by act, with several different sets. Mario (Alagna) is painting a portrait on the wall of the chapel, inspired by a fair-haired beauty who he has just seen praying below. When his girlfriend, the possessive Diva Tosca (Gheorghui) pays him a surprise visit, he must reassert his love for her, trying to ease her worries and her jealousy at seeing the painting. However, that night when a prisoner escapes, Mario is a suspected accomplice and he is wanted by the police. The evil Baron Scarpia (Raimondi) lies to Tosca, telling her that Mario ran off with the fair-haired beauty, and using her jealousy to get her to aid the police in his capture.
This film was included in the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema 2002 ...

Pagliacci DVD
$9.09 Lou Diamond Phillips, the man who was, at one point or another, the "La Bamba"-singing Richie Valens (LA BAMBA), a brightly clad hit man (THE BIG HIT), and a bat-chasing small town sheriff (BATS), returns to the screen as a tough-as-nails hero of the Old West. Bobby Hattaway (Phillips) comes home from the Civil War to find he needs to take care of a little business in the small Texas town in which he grew up. It seems a childhood friend (Vincent Spano, ALIVE) has become the town tyrant, and it's up to Hattaway to stand up for the local citizens. Stacy Keach (AMERICAN HISTORY X) costars in a classic Western that's reminiscent of such Jimmy Stewart pictures as THE FAR COUNTRY and BEND IN THE RIVER.
With heartwarming family drama and adrenaline-pumping action, Lone Rider is a western with guts, glory, and a powerful message. Bob Hattaway, ...
