Formerly of the 1990s college-rock act Madder Rose, New York City-based singer/songwriter Mary Lorson assembled Saint Low in 2000, eventually offering herself up for top billing. On 2006's REALISTIC, Lorson presents a laid-back set of lush indie-pop, with her dulcet voice gliding over Saint Low's subtle backing. The cast of supporting musicians is quite extensive, with horns, strings, and a full chorus present on some tracks, and Madder Rose fans will be pleased to note that guitarist Billy Cote is Lorson's partner-in-crime throughout the record. While "Spider" lingers in a wonderfully dreamy atmosphere, "Dangerous" unfurls as a mini-suite, making this a charming outing that will be of particular interest to fans of delicate chamber-pop.
Never one to rest on her laurels, Mary, a prolific songwriter, began working on the album after the release of 2003's 'Piano Creeps' a collection of atmospheric and evocative compositions penned with her partner Billy Cote. While some of the songs on 'Realistic' are inspired by the birth of their son Roman, quite a lot of the material was composed after Mary was diagnosed, and successfully treated, for breast cancer in Autumn 2003. One of the album's most endearing qualities is its human warmth. Every word and every note is heartfelt, but it never enters the realm of self pity. The album also includes a song called `Lonely Boy' which Mary wrote after the death of Elliot Smith, her favourite contemporary songwriter. Cooking Vinyl. 2005. | | Faith Hill Joy To The World CD (2008)
Realistic CD music
$11.69 The marketing department at Warner Brothers must have really wanted to get a jump on the holiday season when they released Faith Hill's 2008 Christmas album, JOY TO THE WORLD, in September. Hill's set of carols and traditional songs may not suit the late summer, but that doesn't make JOY TO THE WORLD any less of a treat. As albums like BREATHE and FIREFLIES proved, Hill has no problem crossing over to mainstream audiences, and this Christmas set (the singer's first) should strengthen that appeal. If the song selection itself isn't surprising--including the usual fare like "What Child is This," "O Come All Ye Faithful," and "Silent Night"--the arrangements are. A large orchestra, featuring brass, strings, reeds, percussion, and two different choirs, give these renditions a full, sweeping flavor reminiscent of the big bands of the 1940s and `50s. The album also includes an original single, "A Baby Changes Everything," which features one of Hill's most compelling performances.
Arrangers: Dann Huff; Faith Hill; David Campbell; Byron Gallimore.
Personnel: London Oratory School Schola, Metro Voices (vocals); Dann Huff, Jerry McPherson, Tom Bukovac (guitar); Pete Hutlinger, Bryan Sutton (acoustic guitar); David ...
| | Hank Williams Revealed: The Unreleased Recordings CDs (2009) DGBK
Realistic music CDs
$30.79 1951 was a breakthrough year for Hank Williams. He had a string of moderate country hits already under his belt, but the release that year of his version of an old jazz age novelty tune called "Lovesick Blues" suddenly made him a big star. It also meant his touring schedule increased, but he still found time that year to slip into Nashville and prerecord shows for the Mother's Best Flour Company. These good-natured and intimate performances were cut to acetate discs and then played over the air on Nashville's WSM radio station. Brittle, disposable, and made for only a few plays, these acetates were then shelved and forgotten until they were literally rescued from the trash in the '70s by an alert WSM employee. In all, 72 of these shows survived, containing some 143 songs, and this three-disc set is the second installment in Time Life's CD preservation of this amazing treasure trove. The performances are intimate and relaxed, and Williams tackles an amazingly varied set list, singing old mountain ballads, hymns, cowboy tunes, and delivers recitations of parlor poems and other various cautionary tales as well. What emerges is a full, rounded portrait of Williams at his creative and commercial peak. "Lovesick Blues" is here, along with fine versions of "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You)," "A Mansion on the Hill," and the Williams-composed gospel classic "I Saw the Light," among others, including a spirited instrumental romp through the old fiddle tune "Eighth of January," which ...
| | Vince Gill Let There Be Peace On Earth CD (1993)
Realistic songs
$5.25 Christmas music releases have become a country music tradition, but the result is often generic mushy background instrumentation on the same moldy standards. Guilty of this is Vince Gill, whose Let There Be Peace on Earth is as cliche-ridden as they come. ~ Roch Parisien

Principally recorded at Media Ventures and Ocean Way Studios, Los Angeles, California; Townhouse Studio, London, England; BPO Studios, Mmabatho, South Africa.
All songs written by Tim Rice and Elton John. Instrumental score written by Hans Zimmer.
"Can You Feel The Love Tonight" won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance; "Circle Of Life" won the Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals; and THE LION KING won the Grammy for Best Musical Album For Children. "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Circle Of Life" were also both nominated for Song Of The Year and Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or Television; and the album's instrumental tracks were nominated for Best Instrumental Composition Written For A Motion Picture Or For Television.
The heady influence of Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, David Byrne--and all the other musicians who've introduced pop fans to the sounds and style of Africa--resonate subtly throughout the Hollywood flourishes of THE LION KING.
Part of THE LION KING's appeal can be traced to Hans Zimmer's imagistic evocative instrumental score. Instrumental excerpts such as "This Land" and "Under The Stars" are a vibrant amalgam of lush orchestral passages with flashes of idiomatic African vocal colors and ceremonial percussive textures (while "King Of Pride Rock" echoes elements of Mozart's REQUIEM and traditional African six-beat rhythms).
But it's THE LION KING's comic operetta songs and the Elton John/Tim Rice pop miniatures that ultimately distinguish this soundtrack and give it fresh legs for all holiday seasons. John's philosophical ruminations on "The Circle Of Life" are framed by power pop on a grand scale, with huge reverberant drum accents and massive sampled choruses and strings. But "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" is this collection's most engaging song, a sort of Afro-Rockabilly groove, tinted by the gospelish drive of John's Little ...
