| | Afro-Cuban All Stars Toda Cuba Le Gusta CD (1997)
No Samba music CDs
$15.89 A TODOS CUBA LE GUSTA was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance.
A lively, spontaneous record that manages to sound both relaxed and forceful at the same time, A Toda Cuba Le Gusta shows off the talents of many of Cuba's elder statesmen of Afro-Cuban jazz. Over gently pulsating conga grooves and low-register ostinatos, such luminaries as pianist Ruben Gonzalez and singer Manuel "Puntillita" Licea float dramatic melodies, as their solo contributions are answered by brass section chords as thick and sweet as cane syrup. Although it is Ruben Gonzalez' presence on this album that gets the most attention, his tendency towards relentless chromaticism becomes tiresome early on, especially when it is contrasted with the exquisite phrasing and tremulous beauty of singers such as Licea, Raul Planas, and Ibrahum Ferrer. As would be expected, the trumpets blare with traditional Cuban bravado, evoking gentle romance and fiery passion with equal ease. Even the resident gringo, Ry Cooder, gets in some choice licks on "Alto Songo." The relative lack of dynamic movement in most of these songs may lead to them blending together in the ear of the listener, but the inherent tunefulness of each track, not to mention the sheer drive that this band is capable of summoning, cancels that complaint out nicely. An important collaboration ...

$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing ...

EVEN CANADIANS GET THE BLUES was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance.
Rob McConnell & the Boss Brass tackle a mostly blues-oriented program for these 1996 sessions, with five originals by the leader, in addition to tunes by others. "Even Canadians Get the Blues" is a lively shout type tune in the mold of Woody Herman's big band showcasing trumpeter Steve McDade and tenor saxophonist Alan Dean. While "The Clarinet Is Black and Blue" isn't technically, a blues, it has a bluesy air, with Moe Kauffman's melancholy clarinet backed by the lush ensembles, which often include a choir of four additional clarinets. Boss Brass alum Ian McDougall contributed the breezy blues "Do You Mean It?" that puts the spotlight on pianist Dave Restivo, flugelhornist John McLeod, and alto saxophonist John Johnson. The upbeat ...

| | King Chango CD (1996)
No Samba music CDs
$10.79 If you like your alterna-ska more original and experimental than the majority of the genre's other bands, it's a safe bet you'll appreciate King Changó's self-titled debut. Mixing its ska with Latin sounds and singing in several different languages, the large band should be given credit for trying new musical approaches. King Changó have no problem creating a party-like atmosphere with their music, and they don't limit themselves to just one style. Vibrant performances abound, but the true standouts include the adrenaline rush of the opening track, "Don't Drop Your Pants"; the Spanish rock of "Confesión" and "Latin Ska"; and the laid-back groove of the closing "French Lady." The short instrumental "African Fever" contains interesting rhythms and band interplay, while "God Damn Killers" is a liquid-sounding dub. You may be tempted to lump King Changó in with all of the other late-'90s ska bands, but after listening to their debut, you'll undoubtedly think otherwise. ~ Greg Prato
