Bluegrass at the Roots: 1961 is split half-and-half between the Lilly Brothers dueting in the traditional bluegrass "brother" style of the Monroe Brothers and the Blue Sky Boys; and a larger band session that brings in the phenomenal Don Stover on banjo, as well as band regular Herb Hooven on fiddle and bass, with Mike Seeger contributing occasional bass and detailed liner notes. The material focuses totally on the traditional side of things and might be too somber in general tone for some listeners. Although the Lilly Brothers recorded modern pieces and liked to mix the repertoire up, it must be said that they really sink their teeth into this chance to focus on old-timey music exclusively. The vocals from brothers Everett Allen and Bea Lilly are piercing, and as clean as a West Virginia mountain stream might have been before the mines were opened. Instrumentally, things only really jump when Stover steps in and drives ten-penny nails through the front of his banjo head. The recording quality is a trifle mousy sounding; it was supposedly done with an Ampex machine and Electrovoice microphones, so it must have happened in the mastering. ~ Eugene Chadbourne

Bluegrass At The Roots: 1961 CD music
$14.69 While Nashville musicians once unabashedly paid their respects to a higher power upon receiving a Grammy, contemporary bluegrass and country prefer hiding from their Protestant roots. On Higher Ground, Paul Williams and Cliff Waldron travel back in time to offer a dozen gospel-tinged songs with bluegrass backing. Indeed, listening to "My Lord Grows Sweeter Each Day" and "Will You Meet Me over Yonder" will convince connoisseurs of country gospel that not ...

$16.29 In 2001 Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne conceived CHRISTMAS ON MARS, a disorienting sci-fi feature that follows a small band of colonists who have settled on the red planet. Bouts of touring and recording led to a fractured production history for Coyne's film, but together with co-directors Bradley Beesley and George Salisbury, he finally released the movie some seven years after its inception. Flaming Lips member Steven Drozd plays Major ...

Bluegrass At The Roots: 1961 songs
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that ...

Bluegrass At The Roots: 1961 album
$14.79 Randy Thompson's That's Not Me has some very strong songs, which he plays with a great delicacy that brings the listener to the core of the piece. Oft times the emotions expressed are sad and morose, but they're done with care and thoughtfulness so they don't bring you down. They are true to the feelings and themes of country music. Despite this proclivity for the themes of country music, ...
