Four complementary post-bop giants combine their talents on this set of original music, written and played by 74-year-old Kenny Wheeler. Wheeler, whose trumpet chops are still in their prime, sticks to flügelhorn throughout. Although his eight originals are performed at a variety of tempos, there is always a feeling of wistful melancholy, an emotion also expressed by the great young tenor saxophonist Chris Potter, pianist John Taylor (who sometimes recalls Keith Jarrett a little), and the always solid and inventive bassist Dave Holland. This music generally takes its time yet never becomes sleepy or overly predictable, because the players listen closely to each other and often think as one. Although the program would have benefited from the inclusion of a barnburner for variety, What Now? succeeds as both background mood music and a thoughtful set of inventive jazz. ~ Scott YanowDown Beat (p.74) - 4 stars out of 5 - "WHAT NOW? requires one's undivided attention. There are so many stops and starts, solos and melodic turns of phrase, to hear it otherwise is to miss the subtle beauty of Wheeler's compositions."
JazzTimes (p.129) - "Wheeler's writing contains some graceful harmonic tricks that the band devours..."

4 stars Driving through the mist to the sunrise
Intimate and involved conversational chamber music recalling some of the Lee Konitz/Martial Solal collaborations.Wheeler has a glowing, winsome sound and the Holland bass sound is full of warmth.Potter adds a spark and Taylor,a genuine voice waiting to be heard.Don't expect anymore than heavy petting, but getting there is most of the fun in this case. This might have been on ECM had you not had the clear and defined recording quality.Save this one for the morning of the all nighter.

Saliva's ongoing musical development from their rap-metal roots to the often downright radio-friendly songs on their 2007 release, BLOOD STAINED LOVE STORY, reflects the band's adaptability to their changing environment as well as their hunger for success. Their previous album, 2004's SURVIVAL OF THE SICKEST, was recorded in their Memphis hometown and has a feral Southern rock sound, but LOVE STORY's sophisticated sheen and tuneful workouts reflect its sunnier, more sophisticated Los Angeles origins. "Ladies and Gentlemen" may be as tailor-made for a WWF smackdown soundtrack as many of the band's former songs, but "Broken Sunday"'s U2/Coldplay influence hints at ambitions for a wider fan base, and "Black Sheep"'s awe-inspiring dive-bomber guitar riff will be irresistible to anyone raised on SoCal emo who's ever heard of Nirvana.
It's not Saliva's fault that the times moved on and Saliva didn't -- like many bands, they simply fell out of fashion as the years rolled on. Nevertheless, it's a bit of a shock to hear ...
