| | Michigan State University Wind Symphony Blue Shades: The Music Of Frank Ticheli CD (2009)
$10.38 It took nearly two years for the production of this work by the American composer Frank Ticheli with the wind symphony of Michigan State University. Evidently, the director of the latter organization felt quite strongly for the production, more so since he had greatly contributed to the increasing recognition of Ticheli by the composition of 'Amazing grace'. Except for 'Sun Dance' and 'Portrait of a Clown' one can find all of Ticheli's wind orchestra compositions which in their totality appeared in Manhattan Beach Music. The impulsive dance begins with 'Blue Shades'. Listening, a kinship with the stiles of Igor Stravinsky is unmistakably moticable. Ticheli's art of instrumentation comes to the fore in particular in the slower pieces. Although 'Cajun Folk Songs' in this recording makes one miss a certain degree of tension, the 'Cajun Folk Songs II' represent by virtue of a sensitive English horn solo one of this high points of this CD. 'Fortress', Ticheli's first composition for wind orchestra, radiates wit whereas 'Pacific Fanfare', which Ticheli composed for Carl St. Clair and the Pacific Symphony orchestra, evidences nostalgic features. The musical portrait is rounded out by 'Songs of Tagore', a chamber music work for soprano, alto sax and piano, which Ticheli dedicated to his wife. In the booklet there is extensive information on the individual pieces wich represent an ideal supplementation to the other profuse information that one can find in the score. The woodwind performers of Michigan State present themselves in excellent form. Whitwell, in addition to Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr (clarinet) and Joseph Lullof (sax) is joined by other high-carat subject teachers. This CD represents for conductors a most revealing demonstration, more so if one wants to acquaint oneself with the music of Ticheli. Certain pieces, like 'postcard', 'Gaian Visions' and of course 'Blue Shades' crystallize this music out in particular, and represent anentichment and challenge for good wind ensembles.Translates: Lee Bernardis
