Mesmerising
Betke is no stranger to experimental music, and his latest offering goes beyond the outskirts of his usual electronica landscape, creating an album which outshines the predecessors. The intriguingly titled "R" is a remix project based on the tracks Raum 1 + 2 (originally released in 1998), plus two extra tracks.
Pole utilizes sparse beats, minimal electronic stylings and filtered dub rhythms and melodies on the 10-track opus, while collaborator Burnt Friedman spices things up with equally unnerving broken beats with a hint of jazzy vibe on his versions of Raum 1 and Raum 2; and finally Kit Clayton (aka Kid606) rounds off the brilliant disc with his energetic reworks. Certainly not the most palatable music to most ears, but "R" is a mesmerising album for genuine electronica afficionados and adventurous downtempo enthusiasts.
