These gifted artists have achieved the almost impossible: creating a completely unique ensemble voice using traditional jazz trio sensibilities.Their multi-directional influences from jazz and classical to world music provide a free flowing, totally unpredictable musical experience. This acoustic piano, bass and drum trio creates music with simplicity and complexity with a wide range of dynamics and textures. The eighteen tracks on their debut CD, "Thelonius Bach's Lunch", combine song form, improvisation, intensity, space, and humor to achieve exceptional musical expression. There is a special level of communication between these longtime friends that is heard and felt in the music.Individually, these three musicians have performed and recorded with some of the world's greatest musicians including; Gil Evans, Pat Metheny, Sting, Bobby McFerrin, Herbie Hancock, John Mclaughlin, Booker T. and the MG's, Joan Osborne and many others. | | Roy Hargrove Emergence CD (2009)
Thelonious Bach's Lunch album
$13.99 Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has been in some exotic musical environments in the past -- from his various quintets, quartets, his Afro-Cuban outfit Crisol, and his funk band the RH Factor, he's pretty much done it all. And while he's played in various big bands before, he's never led his own until now. Emergence on the Groovin' High imprint features a 19-member big band, playing a set of 11 standards and originals by Hargrove and bandmembers as well as a track written for the leader by none other than pianist Chucho Valdés -- who doesn't appear here. The roots for this project go all the way back to 1995 when Hargrove formed a big band to play the New York Jazz Festival. The group went through many metamorphoses when he played a series of club and festival gigs over the intervening ...

| | Charlie Parker Confirmation: Best Of The Verve Years CDs (1995)
Thelonious Bach's Lunch music CDs
$17.89 Recorded between 1947 and 1953. Includes liner notes by James Patrick.
This generous and carefully-documented compilation provides a wide overview of Parker's work from the late 40's and early 50's. It includes well-recorded material that previously appeared on the GENIUS OF CHARLIE PARKER LPs, tunes from concept albums like SOUTH OF THE BORDER (with Machito's orchestra) and CHARLIE PARKER WITH STRINGS (cooler than you'd expect, at times), and cuts from various JAZZ AT THE PHILHARMONIC releases on the Clef label. The main unifying element besides Parker's work is the touch of impressario Norman Granz, the man who created Jazz At The Philharmonic, and founded Clef records and the Verve label. Granz's faith in the idea of spontaneity--and thus the concept of the jam session as concert or recording event--was tempered by a desire to challenge Parker into going beyond the finite possibilities of the small bebop group. Parker wails with quartets and quintets on the GENIUS tunes, but we also hear him in orchestral settings (one of Parker's own ambitions) on the WITH STRINGS material and bumping up against swingsters like Hodges and Eldridge on the PHILHARMONIC sessions.

| | Donald Byrd Byrd In Hand CD (1959) Remastered
Thelonious Bach's Lunch songs
$9.19 Before he became one of the major crossover performers in jazz, trumpeter Donald Byrd also typified American hard bop. His bright, melodious, quick-witted tone shone in all contexts (including John Coltrane, Jackie McLean, and others), but especially his own. The cleverly titled BYRD IN HAND, from 1959, ...
