In most parts of Europe, Audentity was only available as a double LP; however, Illuminated Records saw fit to release a single-LP version of the album in the United Kingdom, deleting the original tracks "Cellistica" and "Sebastian im Traum." It's this version that U.S. collectors were more likely to find in their local import bins, so some may be surprised to find that they've in effect been shortchanged by half. What remains from the original double LP is still very good, so "shortchanged" may be too strong a word. Both the three-part suite on side one and the side-long "Spielglocken" are interesting, compelling electronic pieces. The opening "Tango-Saty" is a fantastical animal too unnatural for Saint-Saëns' zoo, prodded on by percussion that percolates to its own whims, forcing the beast to alternately lope and limp in comic fashion. "Amourage" changes the setting dramatically, transporting the listener to some stillborn landscape where the wind snakes through broken bamboo trees. Underneath, a piano adds to the placid atmosphere, recalling in some ways the muted and remote accompaniment used by the Residents on occasion. Dedicated to Richard Wagner, Timewind is a 60-minute electronic expedition that is broken up into two half-hour tracks, "Bayreuth Return" and "Wahnfried 1883." The first 30 minutes involves icy pulsations and lengthy tonal flights that unnoticeably converge into each other. While one rhythm gains momentum, the other one slowly fades into a bubbly electronic bath of bright swirls and meandering keyboard waves. Similar to early Tangerine Dream, the music here rises and falls above a distant sonic horizon, and the effect is truly mesmerizing. One specific flow can last for minutes, while small, detailed noises adhere themselves to the main electronic run. On the second track, more of the same far-off synthesized altering takes place, but the washes of keyboard become inoculated with a sharper, more precise sound. Longer notes build into resilient pieces with the same comforting result. This album will sketch a barren wasteland in the mind through the wispiness of the wind-like effects. The second solo album by "Scrappy" Jud Newcomb, a fixture on the Austin blues-rock scene since the late '80s, isn't the piece of outright guitar-hero showboating that one might expect from its provenance. Instead, it's a singer/songwriter-oriented effort filled with quiet acoustic tunes and roots rock shuffles rather than soloing showcases; James McMurtry comes to mind much more often than Stevie Ray Vaughan, and on the opening track "Plain and Simple," Paul Westerberg's solo work is the most obvious touchstone, with the song's world-weary resignation and Newcomb's hoarse delivery. "Damaged Goods" leavens the mood with chirpy female backing vocals and bongos, and "Is That Any Way?" features a groovy organ part played by Newcomb's occasional employer Ian McLagan. Overall, the album is as low-key as one of Eric Clapton's solo projects, but it benefits greatly from the rough and ready production and Newcomb's amiable croak of a voice.
