Sweden's Caesars mine a retro, 1960s sound, with touchstones that include the Zombies, the Yardbirds, the Animals, and the poppier side of the British Invasion a la Herman's Hermits. While it might be easy to label them mere revivalists, there is a freshness and conviction in how Caesars approach this classic aesthetic that is immediately appealing. The minor key jangle of "It's Not the Fall That Hurts" and the arpeggios and layered harmonies of "Out There" hit all the right buttons, while "My Heart Is Breaking Down" shows the band's knack for a well-constructed hook.
At times, as on "Spirit," the opening track, Caesars meld their '60s obsession with a contemporary indie sensibility. Moody and expansive, the tune brings together guitars, layered vocals, and a haunting keyboard line--first with a quiet spaciousness, then with a sense of rock majesty, complete with heavy bass and drums, and feedback-laden guitars. However, the ready-made, iPod-endorsing single "Jerk It Out," with its wiry organ sound, herky-jerky dance rhythm, and memorable chorus, takes the listener, happily, right back in time. With their stylish update of the British Invasion sound on PAPER TIGERS, Caesars have made a highly enjoyable record.

Rolling Stone (p.74) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[T]he Caesars adopt a bombastic, arena-friendly brand of Sixties revivalism....They sound like long-lost hits from some British Invasion band you can't quite place." Entertainment Weekly (p.140) - Ranked #5 in Entertainment Weekly's 'Top Ten Records of the Year' -- "[V]igorous guitar tunes that recall the early, suited Beatles and the pre-downfall Oasis -- the ghost of rock past, done to perfection." Mojo (Publisher) (p.102) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[D]eliciously sugary powerpop." Paper Tigers Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) IT'S AMAZING NOT OKAY! Far be it from me to disagree with the lovely Sarah, but this LP is bloody fantastic!
Yes the signature tune is "Jerk it out" (it's amazing what a bit of prime time advertising can do for CD sales!!!!)
and the Farfisa-driven retro-sound is very Beatles/Doors?Stones/60's...and the downside to this is????
This record, music meisters, is another
must-have for the 2005 collection. Submitted by The reviewer formally known as Tim... (...somewhere in England.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
It's ok, but not amazing I bought the Ceasars "Paper Tigers" a few days ago. Since then, I've had it constantly in my CD player (I like to go through a whole album before I judge it on individual signature tracks). The signature track on this album is, of course, "Jerk It Out" (thanks somewhat to Ipod advertising, though it has been released before). I quite like the album; their style reminds me of The Bees mixed in with a bit of The Beatles (and The Doors...a weird but good combination). It all sounds a bit 60s; very retro! Overall, the album is relaxing to listen to. Other good tracks include "Out There" and the title of the album "Paper Tigers". "Soulchaser" is just brilliant. The album is good, but not great. However, even though it has taken a pre-release to put Caesars on the map, this album is something for them to be proud of, with melodies such as "Winter Song" showing the band's musical diversity. 1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," ...

| | Revolting Cocks You Goddamned Son Of A Bitch: Live CDs (2004) Remastered
Paper Tigers album
$13.45 The concept of a live Revolting Cocks recording (or one from any industrial outfit for that matter) seems strange on its surface. After all, the magic of this music lies within the layered beats and samples, not nuanced performances. Even the crowd noise sounds like just another textural addition to the mix. There is no interplay ...
