Liner Note Author: Kevin Whitehead. Recording information: 1968-1969. Photographers: Spencer Weston; Jan Persson. Although Sun Ra's avant-garde music and out-there attire may make some potential listeners wary, not all of the bandleader/keyboardist's work is experimental, cosmic jazz. HOLIDAY FOR SOUL DANCE is a case in point, since it offers up a surprisingly straightforward set of standards. (As with many of Ra's releases, the recording dates of these tunes are the subject of debate, with some arguing 1959-'61 and others claiming '68-'69.) Ra and his trusty Arkestra open with a lightly swinging rendition of "But Not for Me," which is followed by a slightly more freeform take on "Day by Day." Throughout the album, Ra sticks to piano (rather than electric piano or keyboards), and tenor saxophonist John Gilmore and alto saxophonist Marshall Allen are frequently showcased. (Allen would take over the Arkestra in the '90s after Ra's death.) Fans hoping for otherworldly versions of jazz/pop classics will be disappointed, but those seeking the more accessible side of Ra will find it on HOLIDAY FOR SOUL DANCE. This collection is somewhat of an oddity in that there are no original compositions from Sun Ra. That said, cornet player Phil Corhan contributes "Dorothy's Dance." As the album initially surfaced in the early '70s, many presumed the recordings reflected Ra's concurrent combo and sound, which couldn't have been further from the truth. Scholars have since placed 1960 or 1961 as a closer estimation ...

| | Jim and Jody Old Caroleen Road CD (2004)
Champagne Taste
$15.19 Jim and Jody have been a singing, song-writing duo for more than twenty years. They met in college when he joined the Chapel music group that Jody was leading. Their songs cover a wide range of themes in a wide range of styles-lullabies, love songs, friends, travels, introspective reflections cleverly integrated into folk, light rock, country, or easy listening genres. But why so diverse? Why so scattered? Why not one direction? How can you hope to attract and hold an audience if you cannot be simply and easily categorized into one convenient genre? "When the Muse steps into my consciousness and whispers the wordless wonting of the universe, I am compelled to articulate the message, which words alone cannot adequately express. The music, the rhythm, the mood are all essential to the completeness of the transcendent truth that has found its medium here in me at this point in time.""What are you talking about?" counters Jody. "Why don't you just say you've had almost no musical training, and you play guitar as much as you can because you never outgrew your adolescent desire to be a rock star."I think Jody says it best.Old Caroleen Road is their first official release. In true indie fashion, they have been burning one-off CDs since the advent of the computer-based home recording studio. But they decided it was time to try a more organized approach. Nonetheless, the helter-skelter selection of songs clearly ...
