24/7 album
$14.79 What more could Latin jazz fans ask for, seriously? Not only are all the players just this side of top guns, they have been playing together in the same group for just shy of ten years. An all-star lineup and the genuine synergy that comes with regular collaboration do not happen often. When they do, well, it's clave magic. Pianist Edsel Gomez's playing is sly and intuitive. Bassist John Benítez, whose Descarga in New York could be one of the decade's most defining Latin jazz records, is strong and confident. Richie Flores is the genre's most underappreciated conguero, and his playing is typically incendiary. Robby Ameen is, of course, among the most in-demand drummers on the scene, and his playing is dazzling as always. Brian Lynch has a voice all his own, and of course Conrad Herwig is one of modern jazz's most influential trombonists. This being Herwig's second go at the Coltrane songbook, the obvious choices are done with, leaving him some gems that were hidden slightly below the surface of public interest. "Lonnie's Lament" is masterfully arranged and funky enough to make your hair stand ...
| | Eric Alexander Battle: Live At Smoke CD (2005)
24/7 CD music
$14.29 Tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander and alto saxophonist Vincent Herring pair up for two nights of fireworks at Smoke on this 2005 release. Unlike the various two-tenor battles that have appeared on numerous releases over the decades, the contrast provided by featuring two different reeds is easier on one's ears. The furious take of "Blues Up and Down" (penned by the two-tenor team of Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt) is a long workout starting with Alexander's intense solo, though Herring provides ...
| | Brian Lynch Conclave CD (2005)
24/7 music CDs
$14.49 Trumpeter Brian Lynch has often played second fiddle to his Latin jazz A-lister friends. Be it with trombone giant Conrad Herwig, piano luminary Eddie Palmieri, or any of the host of New York Latin jazzers with whom Lynch has collaborated, the most notable records that he has appeared on have him listed after the word "featuring." The Brian Lynch Latin Jazz Sextet features a group of players who are similarly stellar sidemen, who have backed the biggest artists in the genre, but whose names are not often seen in lights. With the release of Conclave, their day in the sun has come. This 2005 release is easily one of the strongest Latin jazz releases of the year. Luis Perdomo is rapidly distinguishing himself as the most important, in-demand pianist on the scene. Conguero Roberto Quintero, a seriously underrated talent, displays blistering technique ...
| | Mulgrew Miller Live At The Kennedy Center CD (2006)
24/7 songs
$14.59 A fine hard bop pianist who is especially effective on trio dates, Mulgrew Miller stretches out with his trio on this first of two CDs recorded at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. He kicks thing off with a driving take of the old chestnut "If I Should Lose You," building the intensity gradually to a feverish pitch, while he never runs short of ideas in a lush treatment of the standard "Skylark." His sauntering original "When I Get There" shows the influence of both Thelonious Monk and gospel music, while ...
| | Tom Harrell Light On CD (2007)
24/7 album
$14.29 As correctly stated in the liner notes by Neil Tesser, Tom Harrell's music takes several listens to fully appreciate, for there is much to discover. For Light On, his first recording as a leader in four years, Harrell contributed all of ...

| | & The Mysterians More Action CDs (1999)
24/7 songs
$16.35 This set includes an enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files, including a video for "Sally Go Round The Roses."
Fans may lament that the owners of ? & the Mysterians' original recordings are refusing to license a CD release of the band's material, but the group knew how to capitalize on a bad situation. They reunited and released a series of albums of re-recordings of their oldies. ...
| | Greg Piccolo Homage CD (2001)
24/7 album
$13.99 Here's one modern tribute disc that's worth celebrating -- a Greg Piccolo showcase where he covers tunes once done to a turn by husky-toned tenor sax growlers in the jazz and R&B arenas. Illinois Jacquet, Red Prysock, Gene Ammons, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Ben Webster, Clifford Scott, and Joe Houston are the objects of Piccolo's veneration, and he can make you do a double-take at the accuracy and grit of his impressions. Lester Young is the ringer on the tribute list, in a category separate from the heavier-toned players listed above, yet Piccolo appropriately lightens his tone a bit while retaining the slurred majesty of the other tracks on "Lester Smooths It Out." This recording contains none of the usual genuflecting reverence that grips most tribute albums, for it has plenty of fire, spirit, and a sense of fun; dig, for example, Piccolo's R&B honking and ultrasonic squealing on Houston's "Blow Joe Blow" and the gospel-driven fervor on Prysock's "Handclappin.'" The band (Reese Wynans on organ and piano, Marty Ballou on basses, Jeffrey Cashien on acoustic ...
