Originally a 13 track LP, this double CD edition of FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION contains 21 tracks plus an interview with Jonathan King, the original manager of Genesis. Genesis: Peter Gabriel (vocals); Anthony Phillips, Michael Rutherford (guitar); Anthony Banks (piano); Chris Stewart, John Silver (drums). Recorded at Regent Sound Studios, London, England between 1968 and 1969. Includes liner notes by Michael Heatley. This Genesis collection, which has appeared under license to various labels in addition to Decca and London in different configurations, is largely of historical interest. The group was still in its formative stages, the members barely past their 18th birthdays and still working out what they wanted to sound like. Mostly they sound like the Bee Gees trying to be the Moody Blues (picture something similar to the sound of the former group's Odessa album). "The Silent Sun" and "Where the Sour Turns to Sweet" are pleasant enough, but scarcely indicate the true potential of the group or its members. A pleasant enough piece of pop-psychedelia/art rock, but not a critically important release, except to the truly dedicated. ~ Bruce Eder The first full-length release from Genesis, FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION, was recorded while the band were still teenagers in prep school. Produced by pop legend Jonathan King, FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION is, by and large, a lushly orchestrated recording--a feature that band has subsequently been very critical of. Most fans agree that this release bears little resemblance to what the band would evolve into during their next several Peter Gabriel-led releases, TRESPASS, NURSERY CRYME, and FOXTROT. Still, there are a number of tracks here that will interest fans of Genesis's earlier years, most particularly "The Serpent" and the single, "Silent Sun." It's clear that FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION captures the band in a still-developing stage. But even then, it's quite obvious that the core members--Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford--were on to something special from the very first time they set foot in a recording studio.
Uncut (p.129) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[A] fascinating artefact....Astonishingly, they made this entire behemoth in one 15-hour day..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.86) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Electric guitar on 'The Conqueror' stands out from the pastoral psych tones of the whole, while 'One Eyed Hound' closes in swaggering style." Mojo (Publisher) (3/01, p.82) - "...Despite Peter Gabriel's already distinctive vocals, this acoustically-minded work would be accurately described as 'showing potential'..." Jethro Tull: Ian Anderson (vocals, acoustic guitar, flute, bass); Martin Barre (electric & classical guitars, mandolin); John Evan (piano, organ); David Palmer (portative organ, synthesizers); Barriemore Barlow (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: John Glascock (bass). Recorded at Maison Rouge Studios, Fulham, England and in the Maison Rouge Mobile. Personnel: Ian Anderson (vocals, acoustic guitar, flute, bass guitar); Martin Barre (electric guitar, classical guitar, mandolin); John Evan (piano, organ); John Glascock (bass guitar); Barriemore Barlow (drums, percussion). Liner Note Authors: Kaz Akaiwa; Ian Anderson . Recording information: Maison Rouge Mobile; Maison Rouge Studios, Fulham. Arranger: Jethro Tull. Stormwatch marked the end of an era in Jethro Tull's history, as the last album on which longtime members Barriemore Barlow, John Evan, and David Palmer participated, and the final appearance of bassist John Glascock, who played on three of the cuts (Anderson supplied the bass elsewhere) and died following open-heart surgery a few weeks after its release. Anderson's inspiration seemed to be running out here, his writing covering environmental concerns ("North Sea Oil") and very scattershot social topical criticism ("Dark Ages"). The fire is still there in some of the hard rock passages, especially on "Dark Ages," but most of the songs generally lack the craftsmanship and inspiration of such albums as Minstrel in the Gallery or Heavy Horses, much less Aqualung. Just when "Something's on the Move" seems like it could be the most tuneless track in Tull's history, "Old Ghosts" and "Dun Ringill" follow it with even less memorable melodic material. The latter, in particular, proved that Anderson's well of folk-inspired tunes was also running dry, apart from the instrumental "Warm Sporran." ~ Bruce Eder Changes in personnel (yet again) brought forth this rather chilling record. Following the story of a world frozen over, this is a very wintry record from a band that always managed ...
