MCA repackaged two Wishbone Ash albums from the mid-'70s, There's the Rub and Locked In, as a single-cassette release in the early '90s. It's not necessarily a bad way to purchase the albums, but the presentation and fidelity are a little shabby, and the vinyl records and subsequent CD reissues are a much preferable way to acquire these albums. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| There's The Rub/Locked In Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) There's The Rub by itself is worth the price Stellar harmonies, songwriting, and tones abound on TTR, I bought the CD for all 6 tunes on TTR and a couple from Locked In. FUBB, Hometown, and Lady Jay rank with Wishbone Ash's very best work in my book! Submitted by Tom Coerver (Baton Rouge, LA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
"There's the Rub" is Great, "Locked In" falters... Even with the loss of Ted Turner for the recording of "There's the Rub", Wishbone Ash doesn't miss a single beat in crafting excellent songs using the signature style they've developed from their first four albums. The melodies are enviting, fluent and well structured. For me, this is actually the last and one of my favorite Wishbone Ash albums of all time. Silver Shoes, Persephone, Lady Jay, and F.U.B.B. are among my favorite Wishbone songs of all time. However, "Locked In" is missing something. With the introduction of keyboards into the mix and Laurie Wisefields voice as well, the album simply sounds weak in several places. Rest in Peace, Moonshine, and Half Past Lovin, offer up good rhythm and solid guitar harmonies, however the voices and lyrics give you a beating that makes it difficult to sit through. I can only guess that would be due to David Turner no longer offering aid to the songwriting process, just a guess though. Something happened to Wishbone Ash after "There's the Rub" and it's apparent in this duo disc offer. The final track, "Say Goodbye" offers a glimpse of what Wishbone Ash once was, and would never be again. Submitted by zewerw (Houston, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

There's The Rub/Locked In
$13.39 Although this album is now credited to Neil Hamburger -- and it does feature the faux comedian's first appearance -- he appears on it only briefly, and in a slightly different incarnation, than he would on his "solo" albums. Great Phone Calls is, in fact, a series of intensely funny prank phone calls, supposedly made by Amarillo Records head Gregg Turkington, although his name appears nowhere on the disc. The calls that feature Neil Hamburger have the comedian ringing up comedy clubs and begging for gigs ("What's going on there tonight? Cancel it! Neil Hamburger's in town!"), and while they're funny, there's much better material on Great Phone Calls. The hilarious "I'm in Your Band" documents the caller's conversation with an unfortunate soul who placed an ad looking for an "alternative bass player"; after five excruciating minutes he ends up with an offer to fistfight in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. There are 15 tracks and not a dud among them, making Great Phone Calls -- along with the similarly bizarre Longmont Potion Castle -- essential listening. As its packaging suggests, in deliberately broken English, "Every one love to laugh but this ...
| | Papa Noel Bel Ami CD (2000)
There's The Rub/Locked In
$16.85 Of the many Congolese guitarists, there are three that form a triumvirate: Nico, Franco, and Papa Noel. This excellent sample of his work is taken from the 1984 Bon Samaritain and the 1994 Haute Tension. The first musical influence on the young Noel were Cuban sones. At about the same time during his early youth, the first Congolese rumbas were recorded. He taught himself how to play guitar and made his first record ...

There's The Rub/Locked In
$12.15 Originally released in 1995 on the Buy or Die label, this re-release on the Independent Records label contains only minor artwork changes. This album represents the second official album released by Jack and his first solo effort. The first album released in 1987 on vinyl was with partner Brad Jarvis and was titled "TANNEHILL-JARVIS". (Jack's songs on that original release were later made available on a CD titled, "EARLIER LATELY|THE VERY BLEST OF JACK TANNEHILL")Consider the following reviews of GREATEST HINTS as they appeared in 1995:* Jay Lustig of the Newark Star Ledger said: "Painfully honest lines appear in virtually every song, making GREATEST HINTS an album that grabs a listener's attention. Equally important though is Tannehill's voice. He is in his 30's but he sounds twice as old singing in a weathered rasp that adds weight to his stories. Jack Tannehill's new album is full of 'strikingly candid sentiments'. Judging by this album, Tannehill ...
