Based on the short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, this film is set in 18th century Italy. A young scholar named Giovanni (Kristoffer Tabori) falls in love with a beautiful, yet forbidden, girl who tends her father's poison garden. However the strange and unearthly beauty of Beatrice (Kathleen Beller) maskes a terrifying curse which Giovanni must tragically discover. In this adaptation of Nathanial Hawthorne's eerie short story, written in 1844, Dr. Rappaccini an infamous botanist, has weaned his beautiful daughter on various poisons, making her invulnerable, so she can help him with this weird plant experimentations. However, in so doing, he has knowingly made it impossible for her to have physical contact with humans, thus depriving her of a normal life, until a handsome student moves next door... Henry Fonda introduces this production of Nathaniel Hawthorne's 1844 literary work, set in eighteenth century Italy, a young scholar falls in love with a beautiful but forbidden young woman in a strange garden.
