Nightjohn Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) A good movie Nightjohn is about a slave who is so committed to teaching other slaves to read, he returns to slavery from freedom to do so. The movie focuses on his newest student, a young girl on the plantation. This movie is about committment, hardship, and faith, and does not give a white-washed account of slavery. Excellent for children and adults. Submitted by Myla (Atlanta, GA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
A great movie for upper elementary classes My 4th grade class had been studying slavery. I had read the story, Nightjohn, to them. When they viewed the video, their understanding of what a slave girl their own age might have experience was realized through this video. Their responses very were positive. $8.89 In 1869, five years after the abolition of slavery, 24 men find themselves to be captives in the hold of the slave ship "Argon Miss" anchored off of the New Guinea coast of West Africa. The incarcerated men, driven by a spiritual force, attempt to gain their freedom through a bloody uprising. This film shares both a star (Hounsou) and similar subject matter to Spielberg's AMISTAD, but the similarity ends there. This film premiered before AMISTAD began shooting, and is far grittier.

Nightjohn film
$8.79 This television mini series stars Cicely Tyson, in one of her best performances, as Harriet Ross Tubman, the founder of the Underground Railroad, which provided a road to Northern freedom for hundreds of slaves. Orson Welles narrates her amazing story, as she not only helped slaves, but also the Union Army as a reconnaissance agent. No less active later in life, Tubman was also an instrumental figure within the women's suffrage movement with connections to many powerful political figures. However, she is most known for helping slaves escape their owners during the Civil War, a task she did so well that she became known as Moses to the thousands she freed.

$10.09 Tim Reid and Glynn Turman star as two of a group of four black slaves who decide to escape the plantation where they work and start out on a dangerous journey for Canada. Fortunately, the four discover the "Underground Railroad," the famous network of whites and free blacks who shelter, feed, and help fleeing slaves evade authority. Set just before the Civil War, RACE TO FREEDOM is a thoughtful and moving family drama that offers a compelling picture of what an earlier, divided America was like and what many had to do to survive.

$9.85 This overheated melodrama tells the story of a proud slave-owning family in the antebellum South and their eventual descent into adultery, incest, and sexual congress with those of other races. There's a Southern belle who's a panting nymphomaniac, a white man who craves African flesh -- and every black male is a well-endowed sexual stallion. Louisiana plantation life around 1840 is the setting for this racy drama based on the book by Kyle Onstott.

| | Day After DVD (1983)
Nightjohn review
$9.69 Steve Guttenberg and Jason Robards star in this Emmy Award-winning made-for-TV movie about the aftermath of a total global thermonuclear war. Taking place in Lawrence, Kansas, THE DAY AFTER is a bleak look at the effects such a war would have on humanity by using the inhabitants of this small town as a microcosm of the world. Decidedly grim, Nicholas Meyer's film is graphic and disturbing, one that polarized an entire generation's attitude towards nuclear war.
