The music of Quadro Nueva's fifth recording, Mocca Flor, though tango-based, is delightfully eclectic. The set of originals by the band is dedicated to the group's love of coffee. The music includes melodies, harmonies, and rhythms that are inspired by Arabic and Jewish music, the Balkans and Latin America, along with a touch of klezmer. In addition to their usual instruments, such exotic devices as the gusle, bouzouki, sansula, psalter, udu, tarabuka, and the vibrandoneon (an Italian wind accordion) are utilized for atmosphere and color. Diana Krall has a good voice and plays decent piano, but this somewhat ridiculously packaged Verve CD seems like an obvious attempt to turn her into a pop icon, and sex symbol to boot. The bland arrangements by Claus Ogerman (who conducts the London Symphony Orchestra or the Los Angeles Session Orchestra on each track) border on easy listening, while Krall and her various supporting musicians, including John Pisano, Russell Malone, Christian McBride, and Peter Erskine (among others), clearly seem stifled by their respective roles. There are plenty of strong compositions here, including standards like "I Remember You," "The Night We Called It a Day," and "I Get Along Without You Very Well," but the unimaginative and often syrupy charts take ...

In 2006, electro clash artist Peaches put her own remix twist on Tone Loc's "Wild Thing" (a perfect match for the hyper-provocative performer). The sensuous blend made its way to Delicious Vinyl (the label that originally released the breakout single in 1989), sparking in VP Rick Ross the flame of the idea of a concept album. Coinciding roughly with the DV's 20th anniversary, this entertaining and often rapturous compilation invited a host of modern artists, including not only Peaches but Hot Chip, Eminem, and the Philipians to put their own spin on the label's early-'90s classics from Young MC, Masta Ace, the Brand New Heavies, the Pharcyde, and others.
The legendary Delicious Vinyl label continues its Rmxxology series with this collection of new takes on old classics. The co-conspirators behind this installment are DJ Rick Ross (younger brother of label founder Michael Ross) and the infamous electro goddess Peaches, who sought out contributors from both inside and outside the usual hip-hop neighborhood.
