Groove On Down album
$8.53 Distilling an entire genre, style, era, or even scene down to one representative compilation is almost always an impossible duty. The people who put together these Sessions discs, through the U.K.-based Union Square, know this. These people also realize that what they're doing has been done hundreds -- if not thousands -- of times over, but most of the discs that came before have failed in providing something more than just another quick cash-in. Like all of the other volumes in the Sessions series, Disco Sessions takes up two discs, alternating well-known favorites with less-recognized underground singles. The inclusions are often provided in their 12" mixes, as they were meant to be enjoyed; most disco compilations cram as many single edits onto one disc as possible, figuring that the sheer number of tracks will be the key selling point. The Bee Gees, Gloria Gaynor, Chic, and KC & the Sunshine Band are not featured. Instead, there's Pam Todd & Love Exchange ("Let's Get Together"), Vaughan Mason & Crew ("Roller Skate"), New Jersey Connection ("Love Don't Come Easy"), ...

$8.49 This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser.
Instead of a straightforward take on an assortment of seasonal classics, Harry Connick, Jr. decided to make HARRY FOR THE HOLIDAYS, his second Christmas album in a decade, more of a swinging affair, thanks to his use of unorthodox arrangements. Sure, there's enough lush orchestrations on songs like "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and more secular fare like ...

Groove On Down songs
$14.95 Many people think of smooth jazz as something that didn't start until the 1980s, but arguably, smooth jazz started around 1966-1968 with the overtly commercial, pop-drenched albums that guitarist Wes Montgomery recorded during the last few years of his life. Love it or hate it, Montgomery's more commercial output had a major impact on Peter White and many other guitarists who have contributed to smooth jazz (including George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Earl Klugh, Chuck Loeb, and Henry Johnson). Musically, a lot has changed since the '60s, but the more things change in music, the more they inevitably stay the same -- and 2009 found White (like Montgomery 41, 42, and 43 years earlier) still struggling with a desire to improvise and a desire for mass acceptance (the thing that jazz, for the most part, lost after World War II). Of course, one doesn't necessarily rule out the another; the late saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. knew how to be commercial and adventurous at the same time, but most smooth ...

| | Rachelle Ferrell First Instrument CD (1990)
Groove On Down music CDs
$9.19 FIRST INSTRUMENT is Rachelle Ferrell's first album. It was released in Japan in 1990, but not made available in the U.S. until 1995.
Only once every generation or two does a talent like Rachelle Ferrell's emerge, and after a listen or two to FIRST INSTRUMENT, you'll find it hard to believe that these tapes have been bouncing around since 1990. One can only wonder why, because Ferrell's instrument and her ear for interpretation are utterly unique. And while one can easily point to influences and antecedents, when all is said and done, Rachelle Ferrell is an original.
To get an idea of how original, flip directly to cut number nine, "Don't Waste Your Time." Beginning with cuica-like percussive accents over a shifting Afro-Cuban/swing pulse, Ferrell descends into her rich lower register to distance herself from a suitor's scheming and dreaming. She returns after the piano solo with elaborate horn-like arpeggios, first descending then ascending, shading her notes with expressive colorations and Coltraneish harmonic modulations, before leaping into an unearthly altissimo register for a clear whistling tone that must have Lassie doing cartwheels.
Ferrell's extraordinary stylings might suggest Sarah Vaughan's limitless top-to-bottom range ("Expressions") and Ella Fitzgerald's swinging rhythmic virtuosity ("Bye Bye Blackbird") to some well-travelled listeners. And like those two ...
