Irene Kral is one of the greatest singers ever. The songs on this album are all perfectly matched to that matchless instrument and her interpretations are at once poignant and heartfelt, knowing and yet unguarded.
Personnel: Irene Kral (vocals); Alan Broadbent (piano). Liner Note Authors: Rex Reed; Stacey Kent. Recording information: McDonald Studios, Sea Cliff, NY (08/21/1977). Photographer: Scott Windus. Hearing this set of cool, restrained ballads, it is difficult to believe that this was singer Irene Kral's final recording and that she only had a year left to live before her death from breast cancer. Throughout her second set of duets with pianist Alan Broadbent, Kral is almost up to the same emotional level as the previous Where Is Love. Broadbent takes "What's New" as a complex and introspective exploration. Otherwise, Kral and Broadbent interact on five ballads, including two by Dave Frishberg and memorable renditions of "The Gentle Rain," "Something to Live For" and "If You Could See Me Now," plus a four-song "Antique Medley." Few other singers could interpret a full program of slow ballads and hold one's interest throughout. Unfortunately, this valuable LP has not yet been reissued on CD. ~ Scott Yanow

Gentle Rain
$11.45 Personnel: Roy Lee Johnson (vocals, guitar); Keith Samuels (acoustic & electric guitars, bass, digital drums); Larry Hall (acoustic & electric guitars); Paul Linden (harmonica); James Meadows (srtings, horns, piano). Personnel: Roy Lee Johnson (vocals, guitar); Larry Hall (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Paul Linden (harmonica); Ron Harville (bass guitar). Audio Mixer: Jeffrey Alphabet. Though veteran R&B singer Roy Lee Johnson will always be best remembered for writing "Mr. Moonlight," a song covered by the Beatles, astute fans of the genre long treasured his recordings as prime examples of pure Southern soul. WHEN A GUITAR PLAYS THE BLUES placed an emphasis on Johnson's powerful voice and his mellow-toned, crying lead guitar, and couches them ...

Gentle Rain
$14.55 This Limited edition includes a bonus CD containing a sampler of nine Inside Out bands. Could Spock's Beard survive the departure of its now born-again Christian lead singer and main songwriter? Well, they did manage to put together a new album in decent time, but it is not an impressive opus, to say the least. Then again, the group's music was on a path leading it away from its progressive rock beginnings and toward a tighter, harder-edged, more commercial sound ever since 1999's Day for Night, so ...
