 "Artistry In Paris": One of Kenton's best bands
Although the audio quality of this 1953 performance is not up to even the high fidelity standards of its own era, the historical and artistic content far outweighs the audio deficiencies as Stan Kenton leads his "New Concepts" orchestra at Paris' Alhambra Theatre during the band's debut European tour. Among the ensemble's stellar personnel were alto saxist Lee Konitz, tenor saxist Zoot Sims, trumpeters Conte Candoli and Buddy Childers (Maynard Ferguson had departed just a few months earlier), trombonists Frank Rosolino and Bob "Butter" Burgess, bassist Don Bagley, and drummer Stan Levey. The repertoire was replete with compositions and arrangements by Bill Russo and Bill Holman (both members of the band at the time, Russo in the trombone section and Holman on tenor sax), Johnny Richards, Gene Roland, Pete Rugolo, Shorty Rogers, and Kenton himself. "The Misty" June Christy also rejoins the Kenton ensemble, with which she sang from 1945-51, for this tour, and she is in peak vocal form on this set. In summation, the Kenton band blasts right through the sonic haze and delivers one of its all-time greatest performances on "Artistry In Paris".
