Master drummer/percussionist Kahil El'Zabar brought in special guest, violinist Billy Bang to perform live at Chicago's River East Art Center on December 18th, 2004. The concert was a multi-media event with painters, sculptors, and video projection. ...... Chicago-based avant-garde percussionist Kahil El Zabar leads his band the Ritual Trio, with special guest, violinist Billy Bang, in a multimedia performance at the Windy City's River East Art Center on December 18th, 2004. Also featured is bassist Yosef Ben Israel, the newest member of the Trio who exhibits a perfect symbiosis with the group. Ari Brown's saxophone borders on unruly screeching without crossing over, as he retains control with his bravely experimental technique. The event showcases painting, sculpture, and video projection, while Bang's violin travels through a range of styles from restrained elegance to gritty improvisation. El Zabar, recently voted Chicago's "Artist of the Year" by the CHICAGO TRIBUNE, turned in a characteristically spectacular performance, incorporating the African sounds of conga and kalimba to the avant-garde mix. Kahil El Zabar's Ritual Trio Meets Billy Bang: Live At The River East Art Center video
$13.29 Trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith moves from Tzadik to the upstart Pi label for the second release with his Golden Quartet, again featuring Anthony Davis on piano, Malachi Maghostut Favors on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. This measured, thoughtful music doesn't fit neatly into the avant-garde category, although its harmonic language is often open-ended and mildly dissonant. Both Davis and DeJohnette are credited on synthesizer, but the sounds they employ are remarkably close to the old-fashioned, analog Wurlitzer. Combined with Favors' resonant, grooving basslines and DeJohnette's loose straight-eighth rhythms -- on the opening "Al-Madinah," for instance -- the result is somewhat akin to Miles Davis in the In a Silent Way period. A similarly diffuse, vamp-based feel underlies "The Zamzam Well a Stream of a Pure Light," while "Piru" is even more spacious, with muted trumpet cries and drifting rubato sonorities. "Kangaroo's Hollow" offers an intimate look at the tight Smith-Davis rapport by featuring them in a stark duo setting. The title track comes the closest to what can simply be called free ...

Kahil El Zabar's Ritual Trio Meets Billy Bang: Live At The River East Art Center movie DVD
$13.05 Kahil El'Zabar's quartet is an all-star group with enormous potential. The material that they interpret on Big M (a tribute to the late Art Ensemble of Chicago bassist Malachi Favors), unfortunately, is not up to the level of the musicians. Much of the time the players are heard here merely jamming on simple vamps that overstay their welcome. There are some fiery moments from the invididual musicians, particularly tenor-saxophonist Ari Brown and violinist Billy Bang (who sounds a bit more conservative than usual) but the weak originals make this a less memorable set than it should have been considering the artists involved. ...
| | Ethnic Heritage Ensemble Hot 'N' Heavy: Live At The Ascension Loft CD (2007)
Kahil El Zabar's Ritual Trio Meets Billy Bang: Live At The River East Art Center video
$13.29 Kahil El'Zabar's longstanding Ethnic Heritage Ensemble return with a live gig recorded at Ascension Loft (El'Zabar's performance space) in 2006. El'Zabar is a rhythm master who realized the power of the groove long ago and his ability to set up mesmerizing rhythms is on full display here. Guitarist Fareed Haque plays mostly a rhythm role (note there is no bass player), leaving the bulk of the soloing to Corey Wilkes and Ernest Dawkins. Even so, his playing is always interesting as he moves between chordal comping and single-string lines, hitting harmonics and playing behind the nut at one point and even playing some prepared guitar. The band gets some other crazy sounds (for a live jazz gig), especially on "There Is a Place" with Wilkes' cool processed trumpet solo. He also utilizes some kind of wah effect on "Major to Minor." Ernest Dawkins also takes some excellent solos, bringing some real fire to "Hot 'n' Heavy" and "Black as Vera Cruz." El'Zabar shows his versatility, moving from congas to kalimba (the beautiful "MT," for Malachi Thompson) to the drum kit. His rhythms are organic ...
