A no-holds-barred comedy about the eternal battle of the sexes (both inter- and intragender) and starring Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer, THE WOMEN is based on the play by Clare Boothe Luce and is set in high-society 1930s New York. Although no men appear in the film, they are its primary subject matter--cheating men, in particular--and hell hath no fury like a group of women scorned....!

Set in a 1930s Manhattan milieu of idle socialites and gossip, George Cukor's THE WOMEN is an opulent rendition of the Clare Boothe Luce play. While no men appear in the film, they are grist for the mill in the social circle of Mary Haines (Norma Shearer) and her catty clique of high-society wives. However, Mary's tidy world is turned upside down when she accidentally learns of her husband's philandering. Crystal Allen (Joan Crawford), a vicious vixen and ruthless gold digger, has set her sights on Mary's husband; Mary initially plays right into her hands, but soon, with the advice and support of comrades experienced in the art of woman-to-woman combat, Mary decides she won't give up without a fight. The tale's semiregressive premise has been criticized for this reason, yet this does not overshadow the host of exceptional performances and the range of complex relationships the film presents. As a fantasy of a women-only world of glamour, idle pleasures, and raw sexual competition, the film has enjoyed a cult following--owing, no doubt, in part to a hard-as-nails performance by Crawford that was credited with reviving her career.

George Cukor directed THE WOMEN after being dismissed from the helm of GONE WITH THE WIND. There were 135 women in the cast and not a single man. Cukor finally accepted studio calls to have a fashion show interlude in the film; the fashion show is in color. Cukor made three films with Joan Crawford. Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer had a long rivalry at MGM. Clare Boothe, writer of THE WOMEN, went on to marry the founder of Time magazine. THE WOMEN was remade as THE OPPOSITE SEX in 1956 starring June Allyson and Joan Collins.

Women Quotes/Excerpts:

"There's a word for you ladies, but it is seldom used in high society, outside of a kennel."--Joan Crawford (Crystal Allen)

Women Reviews:

"[A] goldmine of razor-sharp insults and catty put-downs....THE WOMEN is unscrupulous, wicked and acid." -- Chris Roberts, Uncut

5 stars THOROUGHLY RECOMMENDED
With stunning performances from Rosalind Russell, Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer, this cinematic masterpiece with witty and biting dialogue is an examination of the "friendships" between women when men are thrown into the picture. The one liners flow thick and fast, with Rosalind Russell in particular, giving a performance displaying all her skills as one of the great comediennes of cinema.

5 stars One of the great "chick flicks" of all time.
This is simply one of the best movies ever made. It is intelligent and thoughtful, while being very funny. It assembled most of the great actresses of the day. I wouldn't have wasted my time on the off-broadway remake.

A potent mixture of melodrama and film noir, and one of the finest "women's films" of all time--featuring a standout performance by Joan Crawford. The story begins as the police interrogate Mildred Pierce, a wealthy restaurateur, after finding her second husband shot to death. In flashback, we see Mildred's life: her obsession with Veda, her selfish oldest daughter; her troubled first marriage, which ended in divorce; the tragic death of her younger child. Left with only Veda, Mildred determined to become successful in order to give her the best of everything -- and she succeeded brilliantly. But the harder Mildred worked, the more the patrician Veda despised her. Now the moment of truth has come: will Mildred once again sacrifice herself to protect her child... from being convicted of murder? Adapted from the novel by James M. Cain. Academy Award Nominations: 6, including Best Picture, Best (Adapted) Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress--Eve Arden and Ann Blyth. Academy Awards: Best Actress--Joan CrawFord. Though she refuses Captain Wentworth (Rupert Penry-Jones) in her youth, Anne Elliot's (Sally Hawkins, LITTLE BRITAIN) love for her handsome but penniless suitor never dies. When he returns eight years later--a wealthy and high-ranking naval officer--she has the chance to set things right. While the two leads ably carry the film, the highlight is Anthony Head's (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) hilarious turn as Anne's snobby father. This Masterpiece Theatre production offers a splendid rendition of Jane Austen's final novel. Anne Elliot fell deeply in love with the handsome young naval officer Frederick Wentworth at the age of nineteen. But with neither fortune nor rank to recommend him, Anne was persuaded to break off her engagement. Eight years later, Anne has lived to regret her decision. She never stopped loving Wentworth, and when he returns from sea with fortune and rank, she can only watch as every eligible young woman in the district falls at his feet.

Life imitates art in this adaptation of Karen Joy Fowler's bestselling novel about a book group reading the work of Jane Austen. Each of the people in the group is at a different stage of life: there's Sylvia (Amy Brenneman), whose husband has just left her for another woman, and her daughter Allegra (Maggie Grace), who's looking for a woman herself. Bernadette (Kathy Baker) has six marriages under her belt, while Jocelyn's (Maria Bello) most significant relationship is with her dog. New to the group of friends are Prudie (Emily Blunt), a teacher who is unhappy with her marriage, and Grigg (Hugh Dancy), the group's only man--a sci-fi fan invited by Jocelyn to take Sylvia's mind off her failed marriage. As they make their way through Austen's novels, they discover that the writer's work is just as relevant in the 21st century as it was in the 19th. The group has its own Emma, and a sparring would-be couple bears striking resemblance to Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy. THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB succeeds largely thanks to the strength of its cast. Bello is better known for dramatic roles in films such as THE COOLER and THE HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, but she does an excellent job with this film's lighter tone. As know-it-all Prudie, Blunt steals just as many scenes as she did in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Though it might seem like a clubhouse with a "No Boys Allowed" sign, the men in the movie hold their own with the female cast. Jimmy Smits, Marc Blucas, and Kevin Zegers play supporting roles, but it's Dancy who deserves the most praise. As Griggs struggles to woo one of the women in the group, Dancy easily wins the heart of the audience with his geeky charm. Five women and one man discuss the work of Jane Austen at monthly book club meetings in this $3.5 million-grossing movie, which stars Maria Bello, Emily Blunt and Hugh Dancy. Bonuses: commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes.

Two girls named Marie see the world around them to be inhabited by a spoiled society. The Maries decide they should be given such allowances and embark on a rebellious streak of what seem to be harmless pranks. However, each of the moves is loaded with consequences that soon snowball into serious trouble. This freewheeling 1966 gem of the Czech New Wave is an attack on consumerism and materialism as well as many other aspects the male dominated society of the time. Director Vera Chytilova weaves together this absurdist allegorical work by avoiding a common narrative structure. Instead DAISIES fills the screen with surreal comedy and unforgettable images of ranging misguided youthful protest to serious political commentary. Tarz & Jane, Cheeta & Boy/Tarzun And The Valley Of Lust DVD  (1970)

Women film
DVD $8.99  4.5 stars Top 500
This campy cult film is based loosely on Edgar Rice Burrough's classic tales of jungle hero Tarzan, and his damsel in distress, Jane. IN TARZ & JANE, CHEETA & BOY, a journey goes awry when our hero's member is bitten off by a crocodile. Already battling the bulge, the King of the Jungle becomes even less appealing to the lovely (and horny) Jane, and Tarzan must appeal to the Wango-Wango tribe for some magical help. The second feature, TARZUN AND THE VALLEY OF LUST, is equally drenched in sex, as a more attractive and lascivious Jungle King has illicit affairs with both blonde bombshell Jane and exotic jungle princess Meena. The Ultimate Jungle Swinger! The jungle is a jinx for Tarz & Jane, Cheeta & Boy when the fearless but overweight King of the Jungle gets his manhood bitten off. Yup, after climbing down the aluminum ladder from his tree house and losing a wrestling match with Cheeta the Obnoxious Ape (played by a guy in one of the world's worst gorilla suits), Tarz attacks a menacing croc who makes off with his member. Ouch! Naturally, Jane is terribly upset. Especially since she's horny as hell and isn't satisfied with Boy, a dim-witted dork who stopped being a boy years ago: "Boy is fastest gun in the jungle!"

Canadian director David Cronenberg, whose impressive oeuvre includes such disparate works as THE DEAD ZONE, THE FLY, DEAD RINGERS, M. BUTTERFLY, and SPIDER, has made what might be the best film of his career with A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. Loosely based on the graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke, the movie stars Viggo Mortensen as Tom Stall, a quiet, easygoing family man who runs a diner in a small Indiana town. But when two dangerous criminals come into the restaurant prepared to wreak havoc, Stall turns hero and shoots them both. After Stall's story is blasted all over the media, Philly mobster Carl Fogaty (an excellent Ed Harris) shows up, claiming that Tom is actually former hit man Joey Cusack--and they've got some important business to finish. While Stall insists that Fogaty is mistaken, his family--his wife, Edie (Maria Bello); teenage son, Jack (Ashton Holmes); and young daughter, Sarah (Heidi Hayes)--gets dragged into the danger that constantly threatens to explode. Cronenberg, whose films often deal with the fantastical, the futuristic, and the supernatural, has done a masterly job creating a wholly believable modern world where evil lurks just around the corner. Howard Shore's tense, moody music complements the outstanding acting in a violent, powerful film that is not to be missed. Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, Ed Harris, and William Hurt star in this David Cronenberg psychological thriller.

Director Manuel Gómez Pereira (BETWEEN YOUR LEGS) spins a fictional tale around a pivotal landmark in Spanish history with QUEENS. July 3, 2005 marked the day that gay marriage was legalized in Spain, so Pereira constructed this light comedy about the impending nuptials of three gay couples, who are planning to tie the knot on the very day the law changed. But in an interesting twist Pereira shifts the focus of his film away from the soon-to-be happy couples and instead weaves an amusing narrative around several of the mothers (played by Verónica Forqué, Carmen Maura, Marisa Paredes, Mercedes Sampietro, and Betiana Blum) who are set to see their sons drift off into wedded bliss. As the mothers fuss and fight, a full range of concerns come to the fore, with issues of class and money raising their ugly heads, and Pereira deftly illustrating that there's very little difference between preparing for a gay wedding or a or straight one. The director throws in a few wickedly funny eccentricities throughout, with sex-mad Forqué's constant fornication threatening to throw a shadow over her son's big day, and Sampietro's homophobic mom being elected to wed all the couples. Pedro Almodovar's earlier comedies such as WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS? frequently come to mind, although Pereira's film is lighter fare, with the director more interested in raising laughs than in raising awareness. But QUEENS isn't designed to make any deeply political points beyond its basic premise, just to provide some entertainingly mindless viewing, largely thanks to excellent performances from its leading troupe of actresses. A whimsical, contemporary ensemble comedy that stars five of Spain's most celebrated and beloved actresses as strong willed mothers learning to cope with the family conflicts surrounding the marriages of their sons during Spain's first group gay wedding. Hilarious high jinx and mayhem unfold as the mothers learn to deal with their own prejudices, history and desires. With the "I do's" pending, will the hearts of the Queen mothers find the strength and love to give their sons away on their special day? Marisa Paredes, Mercedes Sampietro, Carmen Maura, Betiana Blum, and Veronica Forqu star.
