Joan Crawford stars in this film about a working-class woman climbs up to high society and organized crime. Starring Joan Crawford, this heady drama from 1950 sees her take the role of Ethel Whitehead, a strong woman who becomes embroiled in some unfortunate dealings with the mob. Finding herself dating several mobsters at once, carefree Ethel doesn't seem aware of the consequence this may cause. But the mobster lifestyle brings her untold riches, and having risen from an impoverished background, Ethel doesn't intend to return to her roots. Things go awry when a shooting occurs in Ethel's pristine new home, with events conspiring against her and threatening to send her back from whence she came. Damned Don't Cry Reviews: "Dealing tangentially with Las Vegas gambling's formative years, this crackling melodrama was inspired by Bugsy Siegel's relationship with Virginia Hill."-- Mike Clark, USA Today Damned Don't Cry | List Price | $19.97 (You save $4.38) | | Studio | Warner Home Video | | Orig Year | 1950 | | All Time Sales Rank | 29847 | | CD Universe Part number | 6851721 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jun 14, 2005 | | Rating | Not Rated | | Running Time | 103 Minutes | | Movie Details | Color |
Damned Don't Cry Movie Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) The Day of the Damned It was June 1982 and my life had taken a turn for the worse due bad choices I had made. I felt like I was damned and I was wallowing in self-pity and tears.
For a distraction from my problems I clicked on the television to MTV and a video came on by British synthpop band Visage and the title of their sad yet danceable electro pop song was “The Damned Don’t Cry”. Then when the video had finished I turned from MTV to AMC (American Movie Classics) and they were showing a Joan Crawford film that I had never seen before called “The Damned Don’t Cry” (At this point I felt that God were trying to tell me something).
This excellent film struck a cord with me as it was about running away, finding a new life and building yourself anew and learning that sometimes the materials you use to build the new you can come crashing down on you like the proverbial house of cards (only the cards are made of bricks).
Basically Joan Crawford plays Ethel Whitehead (what a name) who runs away from her impoverished home, hooks up with a gangster and becomes his moll (which leads to dire consequences) and ends up crashing and burning back in the squalor of her family home. At 46 Joan Crawford Joan was too old to be playing a gangster’s moll, but she plays it with such trashy, brassy, sassy zeal you can tell she’s having a blast and the viewer has a blast watching her, she is such fun to watch. As trashy Ethel polishes herself off to become the cultured Lorna Hansen Forbes she tells Kent Smith (one of the many men in this picture enamored with her) that the things that they do may not be right or respectable but “We do what we do because we can’t help ourselves”, to me that spells DAMNED and let me tell you with what was going on my life at the time I could relate.
I could relate to the terrific ending of this film too. After Ethel/Lorna’s world comes crashing down on her reporters find her hiding out back at the dilapidated shack called home that she ran away from. One reporters states to the other that Ethel’s home was a hard place to grow up in and even harder to escape from “think she’ll try it again?” The reporter looks at the dreadful surroundings and states, “wouldn’t you?” Then the other reporter looks at the bleak surroundings and nods his head in agreement and the movie comes to a beautiful close; makes you wish there had been a sequel.
I will always remember that summer day in June of 1982 when I first saw this film and learned that The Damned Don’t Cry, we do what we do because we can’t help ourselves. Submitted by rusTdollarix (Washington, DC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

Damned Don't Cry DVD
$10.19 The grisly and debauched film PATHOLOGY is a juiced-up medical thriller that plays like FLATLINERS with a mean streak and a broken moral compass. Writers Mark Nelvedine and Brian Taylor have created a premise allowing for CSI-like forensics along with heaps of sex and violence, truly making the most of the film's R-rating. A high-end exploitation film with good performances, PATHOLOGY is strong enough for horror fans and should go down smoothly for non-squeamish viewers with a taste for the dark side.
Gifted med student Ted Grey (Milo Ventimiglia, HEROES) arrives at a major Washington, D.C., as an intern, where he is met with suspicion and resentment by the tightly knit group of fellow young pathologists-in-training. Soon, though, Ted is accepted into their circle---where they each take turns committing a murder so that the others may prove their mettle by figuring out the cause of death and celebrate with drug-fueled orgies among the dead bodies in the hospital. Things change for Ted, though, when his law student fiancée, Gwen (Alyssa Milano), moves to the city and helps to scare him straight. Soon, crazed Wallace Stevens-quoting leader Jake Gallo (Michael Weston) turns on Ted, putting both Ted's and Gwen's lives in serious jeopardy. The film opens with the Hippocratic Oath, and it's easy to tell that PATHOLOGY is going to show us doctors behaving badly, and the film is in fact almost gleefully immoral, ...

$13.55 Marcel Langenegger makes his feature-film directorial debut with the aptly titled DECEPTION, a film about secrets and lies. Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan McGregor) feels that life is passing him by. He completes short-term audits for a large firm, but doesn't really feel any connection to his employer and finds it difficult to make friends at his assignments since he's never there for long. Jonathan's circumstances change overnight when charming lawyer Wyatt Bose (Hugh Jackman) befriends him. In an instant, the shy accountant is playing doubles tennis with his new friend and beautiful women and visiting upscale clubs. Just as mild-mannered Jonathan is getting used to his new lifestyle, Wyatt leaves town on business. When Jonathan finds himself mistakenly in possession of Wyatt's cell phone, he also discovers a whole new world of anonymous sex in elite Manhattan hotels with powerful women known simply as "The List." But soon Jonathan is in over his head: he's the prime suspect when a woman goes missing, and the threat of extortion looms.
