Life Of The Party
$15.39 2cds-At The Blackhawk,San Fran Cisco (Complete)
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone); Wynton Kelly (piano); Jimmy Cobb (drums). Audio Remixer: Mark Wilder. Liner Note Author: Ralph J. Gleason. Recording information: Blackhawk, San Francisco, CA (04/22/1961). Photographer: Chuck Stewart. The second volume in the (finally) complete recordings from Miles Davis' legendary two-night stand at the Blackhawk in 1961 with his new quintet -- which featured Hank Mobley, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb -- is as stunning as the first. While this set has been available in many different configurations in the U.S. and Japan over the years, it has never been complete until now. In Person Saturday Night at the Blackhawk features no less than nine unreleased performances -- including an unprecedented fourth set on two CDs. The groove is quite different on Saturday evening. Rather than the slashing bop of Sonny Rollins' "Oleo" from Friday, a loping, bluesed-out version of "If I Were a Bell" opens the program. Kelly's interplay with Davis here is enlightening and inspiring; his comps and fills dance around the trumpeter's solo without ever punching through its center. His sense of timing is remarkable in how he anticipates the end of Miles' lines. He shifts gears with Mobley, who is in a speedier Coleman Hawkins mood here and pushes the middle harder, more percussively, as Mobley then plays all around the changes. This gives way to an unbelievably speedy "So What," clocking in at over 12 minutes and driven by Chambers' pizzicato bass playing. Davis' solo in the first few choruses is more reminiscent of his tenure with Charlie Parker than anything of his own, except for the warmer tone. The tune is an odyssey of harmonic invention with Kelly acting as a bridge between Davis and Mobley, offering wide-open sevenths and diminished fifths for each player to wander in and out of. Kelly's ...

Life Of The Party
$15.65 Personnel: Joshua Redman (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Gregory Hutchinson (drums). Audio Mixer: James Farber. Audio Remasterer: Greg Calbi. Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY (03/24/2008-03/26/2008). Editor: Joshua Redman. Photographer: Michael "Mick" Wilson. Tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman has consistently been one of the finest and most accessible jazz musicians of the `90s and `00s eras. And Redman refuses to limit himself to any single, narrow approach. For example, on COMPASS, he revisits the trio format that Sonny Rollins utilized on such classics as FREEDOM SUITE. Accompanied by just bass and drums (including the great Brian Blade), Redman stretches himself far more than on previous outings. His tenor is full-bodied and shiny like that of Rollins, but also deep, sleek, and quick-witted. On a few tracks, the saxophonist even doubles up his accompaniment, playing in front of two bassists and two drummers--sometimes they thunder, sometimes they engage in dialogues with their leader. Joshua Redman's 2007 album Back East rightfully drew critical comparisons to Sonny Rollins' legendary trio date Way Out West, given everything from the mirror image implication in the title to the manner in which Redman offered the material on the set. The presence of Rollins looms large over Compass as well. Once more, Redman explores a piano-less trio, though there are some quartet and quintet numbers here. Redman is accompanied by longtime friends and collaborators, including drummers Brian Blade and Gregory Hutchinson, and bassists Larry Grenadier and Reuben Rogers. The material is with one exception -- a compelling reworking of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata (here known simply as "Moonlight") -- all composed by either Redman or the group. The tunes include some beautiful ballads, such as "Little Ditty," some smoking boppers like "Round Reuben" and "Hutchhiker's Guide," and a beautiful Indo-Asian-kissed number called "Ghost." There is some stellar communication ...
