The third album by Montreal-based experimental music duo Hangedup follows the same pattern as their first two. Cellist Genevieve Heistek plays a souped-up instrument that's attached to an electronic device that loops and adds feedback and other sonic effects to her playing. (Think Frippertronics, only with a bit less structural elegance and a lot more up-yours attitude.) Drummer Eric Craven -- formerly of the considerably more sedate twee popsters Nerdy Girl -- bashes his kit with manic abandon most of the time and lays out entirely otherwise, with almost nothing in between. Producer Efrim Menuck (Godspeed You Black Emperor!) seemingly did little other than turn the machines on, Steve Albini fashion, giving the album a muddy, undefined quality that's particularly frustrating on those passages (mostly at the beginnings and ends of songs) when Heistek's playing evinces a certain lyricism, but adds to the general tumult on songs like the onomatopoeic "Klang Klang." It's rarely pretty, but the soundscapes are often fascinating, for those with a taste for this sort of thing. ~ Stewart Mason

Clatter For Control music CDs
$11.09 Although two exceptional EPs came out between The Troubled Sleep of Piano Magic and Disaffected, an entire year passed -- for the first time since Piano Magic's inception -- without an album-length release. (Piano Magic say this is their sixth proper album, meaning they're probably not counting the Son de Mar score and the two-song A Trick of the Sea.) Glen Johnson's group returns as inspired as ever, turning in a work that matches and occasionally exceeds Low Birth Weight and Artists' Rifles. Some of their other albums have suffered from mild to acute stray-idea syndrome, but they've found a way here to bundle up a number of disparate approaches while keeping it all focused and linear. The most striking songs on the album are "Disaffected" and "Deleted Scenes," where the usual (some might say redundant) round of Factory and 4AD inspirations shifts to the likes of Section 25 ("Looking for a Hilltop") and Abecedarians ("Smiling Monarchs"), with moody electro-pop ...

Clatter For Control songs
$13.95 A STRANGER IN TOWN compiles recordings made between 1954 and 1970 of Gene Ammons leading five different groups.
For those who love Gene "Jug" Ammons' playing, there are various reasons to be frustrated. First, the tenor titan was only 49 when he died of cancer on August 6, 1974 -- in an ideal world, a player that masterful would have had as long a life as Benny Carter. And second, there is the fact that Ammons was imprisoned for heroin use from 1962-1969; the harsh sentence that he received makes an excellent case for combating drug abuse with treatment rather than incarceration. But here's the good news: When Ammons wasn't behind bars, he recorded frequently and his work was -- despite his drug problems -- amazingly consistent. If Fantasy decided to put together a 20-CD Ammons box set, there would be a wealth of five-star material to choose from. This 68-minute CD, which Fantasy assembled in 2002, focuses on different periods of Ammons' career and draws on three Prestige LPs: Night Lights, Sock!, and Velvet Soul. The oldest tracks ("Count Your Blessings" and a soulful version of the Italian ballad "Cara Mia") are from 1954, while the most recent ("Calypso Blues," "Night Lights," and the Eden Ahbez standard "Nature Boy") are from 1970. Meanwhile, ...
