(2 Customer Reviews)
Big bands may no longer regularly touring extensively across the U.S., but there are still musicians like brothers Dean Pratt (trumpet) and Michael Pratt (drums) who can put together an exciting band for a studio date. They devour Ernie Wilkins' swinging "Big Bad Basie" whole, offering a percolating take of Hank Mobley's "Old World New Imports" and a loping "Falling in Love with Love," another Wilkins arrangement. In addition to the leaders' outstanding solos, featured artists include pianist Ronnie Mathews, tenor saxophonist Willie Williams, and trumpeter Don Sickler (all veterans of T.S. Monk's band and occasionally leaders themselves), along with bassist Chip Jackson (Billy Taylor Trio) and trombonist Scott Whitfield (who has recorded several CDs of his own). Vocalist Roberta Gambarini's on-the-money vocals are added on several tracks, including a lush "Skylark," Michael Abene's inventive arrangement of "Cup of Life" (Tom McIntosh's gorgeous melody "The Cup Bearers" with lyrics by Meredith d'Ambrosio), and Kenny Dorham's little known ballad "Fair Weather." Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden At first hearing this , I was immediately moving and grooving to the swingin' sound of the Pratt Brothers. These are all of the best players on the scene in New York today. Adding to the dynamics and sublime distinctiveness of this date is the incomparable Roberta Gambarini. This woman is one of the most phenomenal vocalist of our times. I can't begin to find words to describe her emotion, dexterity, phrasing, nuance and style. All I can say, once you hear her , you'll want to again, and again. Once you open the cd , you will be delighted with and 18 page insert, going into detail all of the intricacies and "behind the scenes" descriptions of the material and arrangements. The Digi pack is first rate all the way. No short cuts here. Take a look at the Pratt Brothers web site, Jazzcomposers. orgI know that after you hear it, you'll be singing praises for "16 Men & A Chick Singer Swingin'."

16 Men And A Chick Singer Swingin' music CDs
$16.45 Audrey Ryan's debut CD, Passing Thru, is a good indicator of the many talents possessed by this creative and interesting singer/songwriter from the Boston area. This album, recorded at Neighborhoods singer David Minehan's studio, Wooly Mammoth, between March and June 2004, is chock-full of strong material performed well. The problem is that the vibrant live show, as well as the energy found on their raw demos, did not translate well on this production by the singer and her engineer, Dave Wesner. Al Marra's vibraphone is a real treat but those wonderful sounds don't emerge as pronounced as on the earlier demo tapes.
Check out the solo in "Red War" to hear a bit of the potential. "Nothing Left" could be so much more if the instrumentation had a better mix -- all the elements are there, the composition being especially strong. Pete Kelley is one of the better drummers around and he helps build a groove along with bassist Casey Abrams -- the latter fellow with his own music in release in addition to his work here. Ryan has a compelling voice and is a soulful guitarist; just listen to "See Can You" for a modern-day "Girl from Ipanema." The music here has fantastic possibilities -- and maybe all that's needed is a remix of the original tapes, for everything on Passing Thru feels restrained -- like a film edited so thoroughly that the colors give the appearance of being more black and white. The science fiction overtones on "Alien Nation" -- one of the disc's ...
