The helpful folks at Atavistic suggest the term "bronto-bassism" to describe the music of this ad hoc collective, which includes members of the Italian free jazz trio Zu and Chicago noisemakers Spaceways Inc. It's as good a designation as any, especially on the vaguely funky, ponderous-yet-agile opening tracks, which are provided by Zu in collaboration with Spaceways Inc.'s reedman, Ken Vandermark. These tunes sound free, but probably aren't; drummer Jacopo Battaglia and bassist Massimo Pupillo are locked in too tightly for this to be improv, and it's a good thing, too, given the snarling flights of fancy in which Vandermark and baritone saxophonist Luca Mai indulge. The combination of the popular mainstream jazz guitarist Pat Metheny and pioneering free jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman may seem an odd one. However, their collaboration SONG X reflects their mutual admiration and shared sense of adventure. Fans of Metheny's contemporary jazz may find some aspects of this session hard to swallow. Coleman's followers, however, will feel right at home with the jarring dissonance and dense textures. After recording successfully in the 1910s and being the top solo artist of the 1920s (according to chart researcher Joel Whitburn), Al Jolson stopped making records for 12« years between 1932 and 1945, when he was lured back into the studio by Decca just prior to the comeback he scored due to the film biography The Jolson Story in 1946. He cut 71 sides for Decca up to his death in 1950, many of them re-recordings of his early hits, now sung in a deepened voice over new arrangements. And he had considerable success, nearly topping the charts with "Anniversary Song," composed for the movie, and reportedly enjoying million-sellers with it and two remakes, "April Showers" and "My Mammy." This midline-priced compilation assembles 12 of those late recordings in a disc running just over 32 and a half minutes, hardly a comprehensive collection, but one that hits the highlights of Jolson's late career.
