Altoist Miguel Zenón, a talented player with a tone almost as light as Paul Desmond's who first gained recognition for his work while with David Sanchez's group, pays tribute to the musical culture of Puerto Rico on Jibaro. Although he wrote all ten of the selections and does not use traditional Puerto Rican instrumentation (which would be cuatro, guiro, bongo, and vocals), Zenón brings back the spirit of his heritage. With its polyrhythms and Zenón's wide-ranging improvisations, one could call this new music avant-Latin, although it not as outside as some of Sanchez's work, but the rich themes and tight communication by the members of Zenón's quartet show that the modernized style has a logic and charm all its own. This is an impressive effort, one that grows in interest with each listen. ~ Scott Yanow

Jibaro album
$13.49 This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris Potter and Robin and Duane Eubanks, Antonio Hart, Steve Nelson, Josh Roseman, Billy Kilson, Taylor Haskins, Gary Smulyan, Jonathan Arons and Alex Sipiagin. The music centers around the opening four-part "Monterey Suite," a tour de force commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival and originally performed there in 2001. Holland's writing for the trombone section is dynamite. Roseman, Arons, and Robin Eubanks offer up solid bottom rung lines and tight timing as anchors for the rest of the brass though they often charge out front. Potter once more displays ...

| | Charlie Haden Not In Our Name CD (2005)
Jibaro music CDs
$15.35 Pianist Carla Bley is the only returning member of the original LMO. As before, she proves to be a triple threat with her dexterous playing, intuitive conducting, and inventive arrangements. Haden, of course, anchors these tunes (which include his own eclectic title track and a soulful rendition of "Amazing Grace") with his formidable--though never flashy--bass work, allowing the other musicians, particularly guitarist Steve Cardenas and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, to shine. This is big-band music that can shift with ease from avant-garde passages to swinging melodies, and the talent on hand adds weight to the underlying messages. Although it's difficult to express political outrage with jazz instrumentals, the LMO does exactly that on NOT IN OUR NAME, conveying discontent, ...
| | Sonny Rollins Without A Song: The 9/11 Concert CD (2005)
Jibaro songs
$9.75 Recorded on September 15th, 2001, WITHOUT A SONG is a live recording by jazz icon Sonny Rollins, observing the World Trade Center disaster that occurred just four days prior to the concert. Rollins was one of the few musicians from jazz's golden age still performing with a sense of vitality, and that is especially clear on this recording, which is imbued with the gravity appropriate to the aforementioned tragedy.
Yet the proceedings are never overwhelmed by pathos or grief. Instead, Rollins and his five-piece ensemble offer spirited ...
| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Jibaro album
$12.89 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release tunefulness, creating rhythmic and harmonic intricacies that seem to spur Coltrane's saxophone exploration ...

| | Benny Goodman Centennial Collection CD (2004) Bonus DVD; Remastered
Jibaro songs
$10.75 This release includes a bonus DVD featuring movie clips and TV specials from the 1960's.
This two-disc Benny Goodman set includes not only 21 swing classics, but also a DVD of rare performance footage. The audio disc is made up of many Goodman favorites culled from 1935-1939, including "Moonglow" and "Sing, Sing, Sing." The former is a romantic selection that features Goodman's groundbreaking quartet. On this track, Goodman's clarinet renders a lonely melody, but vibraphonist Lionel Hampton spices things up midway through the tune with a snappy solo. "Sing, Sing, Sing" has a kind of jungle feel to it, as drummer Gene Krupa beats passionately on his tom-toms. Nearly nine minutes in length, "Sing, Sing, Sing" really allows the band to open up. (This is particularly true of Goodman, who plays ...
