Personnel: Miguel Zenón (alto saxophone); Miguel Zenón; Hans Glawischnig (bass guitar); Luis Perdomo (piano); Antonio Sanchéz (drums). Audio Mixers: Miguel Zenón; Branford Marsalis; Rob "Wacko" Hunter. Liner Note Author: Miguel Zenón. Recording information: systems II Studios, Brooklyn, NY (12/20/2004-12/22/2004). Altoist Miguel Zenón, a talented player with a tone almost as light as Paul Desmond's who first gained recognition for his work while with David Sanchez's group, pays tribute to the musical culture of Puerto Rico on Jibaro. Although he wrote all ten of the selections and does not use traditional Puerto Rican instrumentation (which would be cuatro, guiro, bongo, and vocals), Zenón brings back the spirit of his heritage. With its polyrhythms and Zenón's wide-ranging improvisations, one could call this new music avant-Latin, although it not as outside as some of Sanchez's work, but the rich themes and tight communication by the members of Zenón's quartet show that the modernized style has a logic and charm all its own. This is an impressive effort, one that grows in interest with each listen. ~ Scott YanowDown Beat (p.84) - 4 stars out of 5 - "'Enramada' showcases Zenon's comfort with slow meters and rubato as well as his lyrical maturity as a composer and player." | | Wynton Marsalis Live At The House Of Tribes CD (2005)
Jibaro
$13.65 Live at the House of Tribes documents trumpeter Wynton Marsalis performing with his sextet at the intimate community theater space in New York City on December 15, 2002. Apparently an annual ritual of sorts for Marsalis, the performance makes for one of his best live recordings since 1986's stellar Live at Blues Alley. Backed by a slightly altered lineup from his 2005 Blue Note studio ...

| | Benny Goodman Centennial Collection CD (2004) Bonus DVD; Remastered
Jibaro
$10.75 This DVD/remastered audio CD set includes Benny's greatest recordings plus a special video collection of movie clips and TV specials from the 1960's.
This release includes a bonus DVD featuring movie clips and TV specials from the 1960's. Personnel: Benny Goodman (clarinet); Ella Fitzgerald, Helen Ward, Martha Tilton (vocals); Chu Berry (tenor saxophone); Roy Eldridge (trumpet); Lionel Hampton (vibraphone); Gene Krupa (drums). Liner Note Author: David French. What makes the Benny Goodman chapter in the RCA/Bluebird Centennial Collection series worthwhile is, in this case, the bonus DVD. While every volume in the series has one, Goodman and his bands were used by Hollywood more than most bands from the late 1930s and early '40s, and the stuff on here is prime, as well as the footage of later performances in the mid- '60s. Sure, the CD has good sound and the hits are all here, but the DVD has performances dating from the classic Victor era quartet as well as the orchestra. There are 12 selections on the DVD. The first is almost worth the price of admission on its own. Playing a medley of "I've Got a Heartful of Music," "Avalon," and "House Hop," this film was issued as a short in its ...

| | Mark E Smith Tromatic Reflexxions CD (2007)
Jibaro
$13.89 Von Südenfed: Jan St. Werner, Mark E. Smith , Andi Toma. Recorded in late 2006, just after the temporary flame-out of the Fall while on an American tour, TROMATIC REFLEXXIONS is singer and sole Fall mainstay Mark E. Smith's first solo project. As if to underscore the mercurial Mancunian's need for a sounding board, Von Sudenfed is actually a collaboration between Smith and the German electronic duo Mouse On Mars, and sounds like one would expect that collaboration to sound: Smith's trademark yarling rants, perfected over nearly three decades of fronting the Fall, are backed with chilly, austere electronic dance music on tracks such as the first single, "Can't Get Enough," and the sneering social commentary "The Young, The Faceless and the Codes." Mouse on Mars and Mark E. Smith enjoyed working together on the 12" version of "Wipe That Sound" so much that they decided to give their collaboration its own full-fledged identity, Von Südenfed (a witty mash-up of Germany's süden -- that is, southern -- region and the decongestant Sudafed). Though much has been made of how strange this pairing of artists is, it's really not that unpredictable: Smith, Andi Toma, and Jan St. Werner all like to defy expectations. More to the point, Smith has made a career of breaking and re-forming language in his own image, and in much the same way, Toma and St. Werner keep reconfiguring their music. Besides, getting hung up on the "quirkiness" of Von Südenfed's origins overlooks just how enjoyable Tromatic Reflexxions really is. It's clear that the trio shares a playful, fruitful creative spark -- even "That Sound Wiped," which uses leftover pieces from the initial "Wipe That Sound" collaboration, barely resembles its source materials. Sonically speaking, Tromatic ...
