The second solo album by Mathematics features guest appearances from the entire current membership of the Wu-Tang Clan. On a basic level, The Problem is a concept album against black-on-black violence, but there's an admirable restraint here, a relative lack of "can't we all get along?" naïveté and only the bare minimum of preachiness. Instead, songs like "Bullet Scar," "Can I Rise," and "Tommy" are no-punches-pulled rap parables, stories that end badly for everyone involved with a subtle implied moral. Elsewhere, new versions of familiar Wu-Tang tracks like "John 3:16" (featuring Method Man) and "Strawberries & Cream" (a new slower and more effective version of "Strawberry" from Ghostface Killah's 2001 album, Bulletproof Wallets) are enhanced by Mathematics' skillful mix of samples and original riffs, and the '70s-inspired "Two Shots of Henny" echoes back to the party rap vibe of the old days: five MCs passing the mike over a flexible funk beat with the album's most insistently catchy chorus in between. The album is filled with typical Wu-Tang Clan loopiness -- songs are continually interrupted by a sample threateningly intoning "If you got something to say, why don't you just say it?" -- but as one of the first major Wu-Tang-related releases since the sudden death of Ol' Dirty Bastard, The Problem shows that the collective's core remains strong. ~ Stewart Mason

Problem songs
$11.59 (MP3 Available for Download) On their fifth group album, the eight surviving members of the Wu-Tang Clan had some big shoes to fill--their own. After a hard-felt six-year absence and the death of their most colorful member (the mighty ODB), the Wu were out to squelch any doubts that they lost a step as a collective. Of the 14 tracks that make up 8 DIAGRAMS, few would immediately strike listeners as quintessential Wu. Gone are the lo-fi Shaolin Soul beats and the sped-up vocal samples. And the once-fiery vocal deliveries take on tones of muted, subdued energy.
Still, there is a great deal of innovation here. The RZA enlists George Harrison's son, Dhani, and Chili Pepper John Frusciante to provide instrumentation for their ambitious take on the Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." The Clan's tribute to the above-mentioned Ol' Dirty, "Life Changes," with its melancholic piano chords and verses of staircase reminiscing, is most evocative of that ...
| | Ultimate Rock & Roll Collection: The '50S CD (1997)
Problem album
$12.09 Surprisingly, The Ultimate Rock & Roll Collection: The 50s features more actual rock & roll than either of the volumes of the series devoted to the '60s or the '70s, including early rock classics like Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock," "Heartbreak Hotel," and "Hound Dog"; Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode"; and Ritchie Valens' "La Bamba." The rest of the album falls more into the pop territory of the era, including favorites such as Fats Domino's "Blueberry Hill," Johnny Mathis' "Chances Are," and the Platters' "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." Like most oldies collections, The Ultimate Rock & Roll Collection: The 50s is somewhat scattered, but the whole album is enjoyable nevertheless. ~ Heather Phares
The first volume of Collectables' Ultimate Jukebox Hits of the '50s is much like the others -- a grab-bag assortment. These compilations work best for wedding DJs and those who aren't too picky about having definitive compilations in their music collection. While these discs offer a fair representation of the time period being covered, the process in selecting the tracks for each disc was seemingly done with the aid of a blindfold. Included on this particular volume are Fats Domino's "Blueberry Hill," Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel," the Isley Brothers' "Shout," Danny & the Juniors' "At the Hop," Buddy Holly's "Peggy Sue," and the Big Bopper's "Chantilly Lace." There are dozens of similar compilations available -- this one is hardly the worst or the best. ~ Andy Kellman
WCBS FM 101.1 25th Anniversary Edition, Vol. 1: The 50s collects 24 classic rock & roll tracks that are perennial favorites on the New York radio station, including Danny & the Juniors "At the Hop," Paul Anka's "Diana," Santo & Johnny's "Sleepwalk," the Everly Brothers' "Bye Bye Love," Ritchie Valens "La Bamba," Johnny Mathis' "Chances Are" and Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. ...

Problem songs
$15.15 This classic song from the Tokens is backed with three b-sides.
The Tokens hit big in 1962 with "The Lion Sleeps Tonight (Wimoweh)," a recasting of a South African tune that had been an earlier hit for the Weavers (the song had actually been written by Zulu songwriter Solomon Linda and was originally entitled "Mbude"). Infectious and full of a kind of vaguely eerie and ominous wisdom, the song has been a hit many times over in various hands. The Tokens, for their part, tried to repeat the trick several times (although without the lions) in such songs as "A Tale of Two Lovers," "B'wanina," and "Monkey Vendor," all of which are included here in this brief collection from RCA Victor. None of these songs captured the allure of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," ...
