Brazilectro-Latin Flavoured Club Tunes V album
$7.75 Back-Trac Records was founded in the 1980s with the philosophy that there were certain recording stars who had only a handful of hits and that there should be low-priced compilations consisting of those hits and not much else. Back-Trac generally licensed only about ten tracks per artist from the major labels for their bargain-basement LPs and cassettes. Gary Puckett & the Union Gap were perfect for this no-frills approach, and their Back-Trac album was typical. The group scored five Top Ten hits in the late '60s -- "Woman, Woman," "Young Girl," "Lady Willpower," "Over You," and "This Girl Is a Woman Now" -- and all five were included, along with the Top 40 hit "Let's Give Adam and Eve Another Chance." ("Don't Give in to Him," ...

Brazilectro-Latin Flavoured Club Tunes V songs
$15.19 Son might be a bit of a catch-all name for many of the Cuban styles, but there's no doubt it's completely associated with Cuba. What Sierra Maestra offer on this album is a brief history of son, with big songs from such classic composers as Beny Moré and Arsenio Rodriguez. As is ...
| | Lee Burridge Global Underground: Nubreed CDs (2001)
Brazilectro-Latin Flavoured Club Tunes V album
$24.05 This entry into the ongoing Global Underground series represents perhaps the most eclectic mix to date, as Lee Burridge manages to teeter somewhere between straight-ahead mid-tempo house rhythms and dynamic breaks. And he doesn't just follow house records with breaks, but rather spins tracks that feature both styles of beats interwoven within the rhythms. So, given this untraditional approach, Burridge presents a set that's, at the least, always interesting. You're never quite sure where he's headed -- sometimes moving away from breaks towards a more grounded, 4/4 rhythm, other times doing quite the opposite. Furthermore, the ubiquitous progressive sound that has so long been a staple of the Global Underground series is, for the most part, absent here. ...

CARRYING YOUR LOVE WITH ME is a collection of love songs of unusual sweetness and devotion. Even when he's saying goodbye, or warning a friend of an ex-girlfriend's wily ways, George Strait does it with a fond memory. "I've Got A Funny Feeling" may be the first cheating song in history in which the singer, after discovering his baby's cheating ways, ...

| | Baron Zen At The Mall: Remixes CD (2006)
Brazilectro-Latin Flavoured Club Tunes V album
$12.45 Recorded by college friends between 1988 and 1992, Baron Zen's At the Mall sounds, well, a lot like something some music-loving kids would record between 1988 and 1992. The Joy Division, Black Flag, and Dead Milkmen influences are all there, as are the early hip-hop, pop, and even disco ones. It's clearly music made by people who liked a lot of different styles (one of Baron Zen's members, Chris Manak, aka DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, though he doesn't show up on every song on the album -- only Sweet Steve, the band's songwriter and main performer, has that honor -- went on to form the Stones Throw record label), and who have some fun toys (a four-track and drum machine, as well as a keyboard and some guitars) and a lot of free time. The covers of Joy Division's "Walked in Line" and Debbie Deb's "When I Hear Music" (which takes an almost industrial spin, and is actually pretty cool) are unpretentious and catchy, and the original pieces, albeit a little purposeless and messy, are guiltily enjoyable. Which means that although At the Mall isn't a great record, ...
