(10 Customer Reviews)
Many rock bands talk endlessly about their "sound," refining a basic formula until it's either perfect or perfectly boring. System of a Down, however, developed a loyal fanbase with the opposite approach--the group mixes genres so freely that describing what their music sounds like is nearly impossible. Sure, SOAD is, at its core, a metal band, but on MEZMERIZE's first two songs alone, vocalist/guitarist/mastermind Daron Malakian and crew zigzag their way though Beach Boys-like stacked vocal harmonies, Anthrax-esque hardcore thrash, Cameo-style funk, and prog rock of a CARESS OF STEEL-era Rush variety. "Revenga" adds a touch of swooping Freddie Mercury vocal drama to the mix, while "Sad Statue" sports a guitar riff that sounds like a Greek bouzouki. Even sharper, tighter, and more ambitious than System of a Down's previous albums, MEZMERIZE makes for a consistently surprising listen.
System of a Down: Daron Malakian (vocals, guitar); Serj Tankian (vocals, keyboards); Shavo Odadjian (bass guitar); John Dolmayan (drums).
Rolling Stone (No. 975, pp.67-70) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "[E]verything on MEZMERIZE hits and splits with viciously honed purpose..." Mezmerize album
$8.49 Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate backdrop for Muddy's rich vocal and expressive bottleneck guitar work. The richness of Muddy's baritone is showcased effectively here, with more room than usual for his voice to resonate.
The low-key setting allows Muddy to explore a fuller dynamic range as well. From the romantic yearning of "Long Distance Call" to ...

$9.29 "Chop Suey!" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
"Aerials" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Hard Rock Performance.
While System of a down are often cast with the nu-metal crowd, their sound is closer to '80s thrash (and even hardcore punk) than to any of the rap-metal hordes. Grinding guitars and death-knell drums may be the order of the day, but they work in service of a highly developed socio-political consciousness. In fact, when he's not lacerating his vocal cords, singer Tankian delivers his rebellious lyrics in a tone reminiscent of infamous Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra. Make no mistake, the thrash quotient on TOXICITY ...
| | Philipp Fankhauser Talk To Me CD (2004)
Mezmerize music CDs
$12.65 Talk To Me is the title of the latest album from Philipp Fankhauser, the highly regarded blues artist based in Thun, Switzerland, and his first for Memphis International Records. Fankhauser is well known to European audiences but he is also familiar to North Americans as a result of his role as guest vocalist with the band of the late blues great Johnny "Clyde" Copeland. While the bulk of Talk To Me is comprised of l Fankhauser originals it does include two Johnny Copeland compositions and Shemekia Copeland, Johnny's daughter and a renowned star in her own right, penned the liner notes. "Philipp will always be very special to the Copeland family; his music is special for just about everyone," she wrote. The album includes a version of "Members Only," a song that was an R&B hit for Bobby Bland in the 1980s and produced for Fankhauser by Dennis Walker (Robert Cray, B.B. King, Maria Muldaur) with an appearance by the Memphis Horns. Bobby Bland finally met Fankhauser in the '90s and expressed great admiration for the Swissman's interpretation of one of his signature songs.Downbeat's review of Talk To Me noted "Fankhauser doesn't sound the least bit like a visitor from Switzerland that unrealistically fancies himself ...
| | System Of A Down Hypnotize CD (2005) DualDisc
Mezmerize songs
$16.69 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Just when it seemed that System of a Down couldn't do anything to improve on their standing as the most unique and ambitious band in the alternative metal world, they decided to drop their sprawling, Rick Rubin-produced double album by releasing each disc separately. Early 2005 saw the arrival of MESMERIZE. After that album gained significant exposure via tours, radio, and videos, the album's counterpart, HYPNOTIZE, was released in late November. The albums were recorded in the same sessions--so there is a strong sense of musical cohesion, and even the CD packages themselves are designed to fit together to form one set.

| | Persuasions Sing The Beatles CD (2002) (Import) SACD Hybrid
Mezmerize songs
$18.29 THE PERSUASIONS SING THE BEATLES is a tribute CD where the songs are performed completely accapella.
It may be easy to get cynical toward a project like this, especially with so many Beatles cover albums floating around. But leave it to the Persuasions, a 40-year-old a cappella singing group, to make virtually every kind of Beatles song fit into their style. They turn "Come Together" into doo wop, "Oh! Darling" becomes a sweet soul ballad, even "Don't Let Me Down" becomes an impassioned R&B track. A few songs lose a little bit of steam from these renditions, especially "Love Me Do." But these aren't bad versions of these songs; they just take a ...

One of writer James Baldwin's characters once observed, "You can't sing outside the song, you've got to be the song you sing. You've got to make a confession." Few modern singers on pop and R&B radio live as deeply inside their songs as fellow Harlemite Kelis, who passionately screamed "I hate you so much right now!" on her first single, "Caught Out There." That song was equal parts punk and funk, and the rest of her excellent debut, KALEIDOSCOPE, wandered through style after style, revealing her proficiency in all.
"Milkshake," the opening single of her third effort (her ...

Mezmerize songs
$12.05 The Paris Sisters' last official album, originally released on Reprise in 1966, was their crowning achievement. Alas, it was also ignored completely by the record-buying public, despite the fact that each of its ten songs was crafted as a potential single with mass appeal specifically in mind and the overall album was intended to showcase the trio's entire stylistic range and history, from their origins as a three-part harmony group influenced by the McGuire Sisters ("Sincerely") and the Chordettes ("Born to Be With You") to their period recording for Phil Spector ("See That Boy") ...
