| | John Mellencamp Big Daddy CD John Mellencamp Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Continuing with the folk inclinations of The Lonesome Jubilee, John Mellencamp recorded his most ambitious and serious-minded album with Big Daddy. Mellencamp produced the record himself, giving the album a concise and stripped-down sound, which help give his songs the appearance of being gritty statements of truth. Unfortunately, Mellencamp isn't saying nearly as much as he believes he is, since his lyrics tend to be clichéd and half-baked, making much of the album feel pompous and self-serving. This is only reinforced by the lack of rockers on Big Daddy, since he saves the most carefree moment -- a ripping cover of the Hombres' "Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out)" -- for an unlisted bonus track. Still, when he does hit his target, like on the gentle "Jackie Brown," the stuttering, fiddle-driven "Sometimes a Great Notion," and even the self-pitying "Pop Singer," Mellencamp proves that his talents haven't abandoned him. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

$6.55 When John Cougar Mellencamp released 1985's SCARECROW, American farmers were taking a major hit from bank foreclosures and soaring interest rates that were destroying their way of life. For Mellencamp, this issue hit close to home since his great-grandfather's family farm had been sold after his sudden death. Looking to his Midwest upbringing for inspiration, the Indiana native composed 11 rootsy songs, featuring fully realized characters that drew from his experiences growing up as a rebel then escaping from small-town life, before he re-embraced his roots.
Among the many highlights of this breakthrough album were the tribute to '60s AM Top 40 radio "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A. (A Salute ...

On their second album Presents Exclusively Talentmaker, Optiganally Yours craft more dreamy, whimsical indie pop from ancient synths. This time, as the title suggests, the group works only with the Talentmaker, a keyboard that triggers celluloid discs with various sound effects and instruments recorded on them. The instrument's limitations work as a springboard for Rob Crow and Pea Hix's creativity; for example, the anti-jock-rock anthem "I'm Bad At Sports" is arranged for a tinny banjo and a bowling alley. However, the album isn't an excersise ...

$11.39 For Immediate Release(Detroit,MI)Scorpion/Hanzie Records announce the release of veteran Detroit rock vocalist "Dave Edwards" debut solo CD "Take Another Look" which is being described as "Pure Rock and Roll". Dave Edwards has been well known to Detroit audiences for years as the lead singer of "The Look". The Look's original line up in the early 80's recorded albums for labels such as Fantasy and A&M Records and had some national success. They had videos on MTV (during the music channels infancy)and appeared on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand". They toured throughout the U.S. and Canada and had record sales and airplay in Europe. Since 1990 "The Look" have gone through various line-ups and personnel changes throughout the past 15 years, but still managed to release a CD entitled "Look Who's Rockin" in 1997 on the Dave Edwards' owned label Scorpion Records and a compilation called "A Collection For The Record" in 2003 also on Scorpion. Vocalist Dave Edwards has now partnered with veteran Long Island New York born guitarist and producer Bob Monteleone who is the Hanzie Record's CEO. Bob is best known for his work with Detroit reggae band "Black Market" and in his "spare time" produces other acts for his label. Besides playing many of the instruments on "Take Another Look" Bob also has a duo called "Luck and Trouble" with former "Refreshments" guitarist, songwriter Brian Blush who co-wrote the theme for the TV show "King of the Hill". Bob and Dave hooked up in 2001 (Bob was in "The Look" 1990-92) to record "Let's Make Love" and "Giving It Up for Your Love" at famed Producer Eric Morgeson's Studio A. Eric and his Studio A have recorded some of the all time greats like Aretha Franklin, Bob Seger, Uncle Kracker and Eminem. Dave and Bob had so much fun during the Studio A sessions that they decided move the recording to Bob's "Nothing Fancy" Studios to finish the rest of "Take Another Look", which include songs saved from a lifetime of performing. "Take Another Look" is an attempt to rein in ...
