(4 Customer Reviews)
With 1985's SCARECROW, John Cougar Mellencamp established himself as an uncompromising artist fully in control of his professional and artistic pursuits. With THE LONESOME JUBILEE, however, he set out to paint his masterpiece. Fully embracing the aesthetic found on the classic hits "Pink Houses" and "Jack and Diane," the Indiana native explores rock's rootsier elements, while forgoing the poetic aspirations of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan in favor of simpler, straight-from-the-gut lyricism.
In the process, Mellencamp created the trademark working-class pop hybrid that defined his brand of "heartland rock." Backed by folksy fiddle and accordion, jangling power-pop guitars, and a pounding beat equal parts Memphis soul and Rolling Stones, the singer repeatedly explores the twin themes of broken dreams ("Paper in Fire," "The Real Life") and simple pleasures ("Cherry Bomb," "Rooty Toot Toot"). Simultaneously an arena-ready Grand Statement and a Saturday night hoe-down, THE LONESOME JUBILEE goes a long way towards fusing the rebel spirit and brash roar of no-frills rock & roll with the emotionally direct twang of the best country music.

One of his best!! Great album, somewhat uncharacteristic of John. Awesome music and composition. Submitted by cub (Rio Vista, Ca.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Outstanding Even 20 Years Later I bought the audio tape back in '87 when it was first released. After I read reviews in Playboy Magazine and listened to "Paper & Fire" on the radio,I knew the album had to be great. Boy was I ever right! Ten years late I bought the CD after my tape was completely wasted. When I bought my first mp3 player in July of 2007, I figured I would put this CD on it. This is by far the best overall album I have truly heard in years. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed. Submitted by The Steeleman (Bellaire, OH USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Straight From The Heartland While Ronald Reagan pontificated about making America great in the 1980's, John Mellencamp wasn't buying any of it. With honest lyrics and gritty music, Indiana's favorite son chronicled trouble in the heartland, where the rich got richer and the working class had trouble finding work. The Real Life, so aptly named, expressed the aspirations of ordinary people and is one of JM's most underrated songs. Paper in Fire smolders with human frustration. Every song rings true, even today. $6.85 For 1983's UH HUH, the follow-up to his breakthrough album, AMERICAN FOOL, John Cougar reclaimed his real last name--Mellencamp--while keeping "Cougar" as a middle name. The change is significant, since UH HUH still features the swaggering rock & roll of ...
| | John Mellencamp Big Daddy CD (1989) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Lonesome Jubilee music CDs
$6.85 Continuing with the folk inclinations of The Lonesome Jubilee, John Mellencamp recorded his most ambitious and serious-minded album with Big Daddy. Mellencamp produced the record himself, giving the album a concise and stripped-down sound, which help give his songs the appearance of being gritty statements of truth. Unfortunately, Mellencamp isn't saying nearly as much as he believes he is, since his lyrics tend to be clichéd and half-baked, making much of the album feel pompous and self-serving. This is only reinforced by the lack of rockers on Big Daddy, since he saves the most carefree moment ...

Lonesome Jubilee songs
$6.55 When John Cougar Mellencamp released 1985's SCARECROW, American farmers were taking a major hit from bank foreclosures and soaring interest rates that were destroying their way of life. For Mellencamp, this issue hit close to home since his great-grandfather's family farm had been sold after his sudden death. Looking to his Midwest upbringing for inspiration, the Indiana native composed 11 rootsy songs, featuring fully realized characters that drew from his experiences growing up as a rebel then escaping from small-town life, before he re-embraced his roots.
Among the many highlights of this breakthrough album were the tribute to '60s AM Top 40 radio "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A. (A Salute To 60's Rock)," and the jangly funk of "Justice and Independence '85." The latter was inspired by the healthy birth of his daughter, who was in danger of deformity due to her mom's chicken pox. Elsewhere, Mellencamp mixed in commercially successful populist anthems ...
| | John Mellencamp Whenever We Wanted CD (1991)
Lonesome Jubilee album
$15.15 John Mellencamp took his signature blend of Stonesy rock and folk as far as it could go on Big Daddy, so he wisely returned to straight-ahead rock & roll with Whenever We Wanted. Uh-Huh was the last record he made that rocked as hard and consistently as this, and his songwriting had improved considerably in the years since that breakthrough release. Which means, of course, that Whenever We Wanted ...

$8.79 There was a time in the mid-'60s when Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich could do no wrong on the British charts. They were very much a singles band, but with the team of Alan Blaikley and Ken Howard penning the songs, they were on a roll with unusual, ear-catching ...
