This double-disc set is something of a holy grail for T. Rex fanatics. Both discs contain music from BORN TO BOOGIE, a film about T. Rex frontman Marc Bolan made by Ringo Starr in 1972. The film was considered lost until 2003, when old prints where found and painstakingly restored. This expanded CD reissue covers the music from the original film, as well as additional material, including excerpts from concerts recorded at Wembley stadium, and a BBC interview with Bolan from 1971.
Bolan is backed here by his crack band, and by Ringo and Elton John (both of whom are professed T. Rex fans). The playlist includes many of his finest tunes: the rollicking "Jeepster," the slinky bounce of "Get It On," and the epic, metaphysical autobiography-in-song "Cosmic Dancer," in addition to fun covers ("Tutti Frutti") and selections of Bolan's poetry. The tapes have been remastered to sparkling effect, and everything here, from Bolan's trademark yelps and moans to the ecstatic screaming of his female fans, is crystal clear. Moreover, BORN TO BOOGIE captures T. Rex at his commercial and artistic apex, and offers a snapshot of the glam superstar in a unique and significant moment in rock & roll history. Michael Chagnon was sitting on the couch when he heard a familiar tune. The notes coming from the TV’s speakers were from his guitar and his band, Escape Velocity. Months earlier Chagnon sent MTV a CD with the song “Gwynneth,” on it. The song appeared on a documentary about teens at fat camp. Since the brief exposure to a worldwide audience, Escape Velocity has recorded and released its second album, “Old Familiar Way.”“Old Familiar Way” is available now, but is it any good? Should you spend your hard earned money on it? There’s one way to find out: listen to it. The whole album (minus one song) is available in streaming audio beginning today on the band’s web site (www.escapevelocity.com). The missing song can be found on Beats in the Burg.If you like what you hear, “Old Familiar Way” can be purchased over the Internet. The guys in Escape Velocity are taking this different approach to sell their album because they feel like it’s the best way to showcase their band. “If you hear it, you’ll be more likely to buy it,” said Dustin West, the band’s bassist. West said there’s a lot more acoustic and catchy stuff on the album and it’s less “hard rockin’”.The members of Escape Velocity met when they were in Boy Scouts, but didn’t really become friends until high school. The group of guys lived in the same neighborhood, went to Heritage High School and participated in the school’s theater program.When they were sophomores they started to mess around with different instruments. All three had taken some experience with music. Drummer Aaron Horton and West played in the high school band. Chagnon played the violin in elementary school and graduated to the guitar by the time he hit eighth grade and started listening to Weezer. “That’s where the guitar came in,” he said.Meanwhile, the other two pieces of Escape Velocity were starting to take shape. Horton got a new drum set and West got a bass guitar. They were a band, but they needed a name.One day in a high school physics class, Chagnon had an epiphany. He wanted a name and found it while the teacher discussed the effects of escape velocity. “It just kind of stuck,” Chagnon said. But he admitted the “name doesn’t particularly go with the band.”As Escape Velocity continued to practice, they started to get shows. At first, they played in basements and at parties. Then, they were offered to play around Lynchburg at venues such as the Drowsy Poet, Big Lick Tropical Grill and the now defunct Bistro. Soon, the band started to amass a local following. “We don’t sound like anybody else,” West said, but mentioned that they’re greatly influence by the Beatles.
