Allmusic Guide Review by Alex Henderson If you live in a vertical, pedestrian-oriented city like New York, London, Chicago (Tony Lunn's home town), or Boston, it's very easy to come across singer/songwriters. They're performing in subway stations; they're playing in an abundance of small cafes, coffeehouses, bars, and restaurants that you can easily drop by walking home from work. Los Angeles also has a long history of worthwhile singer/songwriters, but because of the city's horizontal, spread-out geography and its emphasis on the automobile, you don't feel like singer/songwriters are jumping out at you as often. You have to know where to find them â€" and The Last Days of Diresville demonstrates that Lunn is among the L.A.-based singer/songwriters who is worth finding. The Midwest native turned Southern California resident isn't groundbreaking or innovative, but he's an expressive vocalist and a talented lyricist with an appealing roots rock/adult alternative/folk-rock outlook. Many of Lunn's influences are people who emerged in the '60s and '70s â€" Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Stephen Stills, and the Beatles, among others â€" and those influences serve him well on melodic, reflective offerings like "Welcome to the Past," "Burden," "Change," and the moody title track. In addition to writing most of the material, Lunn co-produced this 46-minute CD with engineer John X; together, they make The Last Days of Diresville sound well produced but not over-produced â€" which is a good thing because when you're a singer/songwriter like Lunn, you need a production that doesn't get in the way of your vocals or your lyrics. Going for a big, elaborate, high-gloss production can be fine if you're providing rap or dance music, but Lunn is the sort of artist who is better served by intimacy â€" and that is exactly what he provides on this likable debut.

...And Finally
Scheer ...And Finally CD  (2000)

Last Days Of Diresville
CD $16.45
And Finally, Scheer's aptly-titled, posthumous follow-up to their 1996 album Infliction, reveals that, despite their problems with 4AD, the group was becoming a stronger and more creative unit, blending Audrey Gallagher's deceptively sweet voice and their wall-of-guitars sound more successfully. Where parts of Infliction sounded like the Cranberries and Bush mixed together just for the heck of it, And Finally's stronger songwriting and clearer production provide the focus and polish necessary to make Scheer's sound less forced. The group's hard pop side is well represented by tracks like "Deadly Serious," "6am," "Suffocate," and "Mercy," all of which sound crisper and more dynamic than Infliction's overly grungy rock did. Likewise, their brooding ballads are slightly revved up, giving "First Contact," "Where Were You When the House Burned Down," and a reworking of the vintage Scheer song "Say What You Came to Say" more cohesiveness within the album's context. Though it grows somewhat ...
Bohemia
Mae Moore Bohemia CD  (1991)

Last Days Of Diresville
CD $16.45
Moore finds herself with a fine supporting crew on Bohemia, first and foremost thanks to the production and co-writing help of Steve Kilbey from the Church. Bandmate Peter Koppes adds guitar to one song, while Kilbey's Jack Frost partner, Grant McLennan, contributes throughout; meanwhile, Moore's fellow Canadian, Gordon Downie, shares vocals with her on the excellent "The Wish." All the appearances wouldn't mean much if Moore's own abilities weren't up to snuff, but Bohemia is an enjoyable, coolly fascinating album worthy of its own reputation rather than any Church or Go-Betweens family-tree ties or the like. Whether it's the low-key rap on the verses of the title track or on the break of "Because of Love" or her wonderful backing vocal overdubs on the brilliant "Shape of Love," Moore readily stands on her own two feet. The blend of Moore and Kilbey's guitar work throughout is particularly lovely; the two have a definite rapport, and the sound is lush without ever being overwhelming, supporting Moore's wistfully cool-but-not-cold singing to a tee. Certainly compared to the almost willfully straightforward (and blasé) rash of female folk-influenced performers in the '90s, Moore shines and sparkles with life, the songs providing gentle rock and funk energy without obviously reaching for it. Lynn Canfield in the Moon Seven Times might be the best comparison ...
